Pushing a Handcart in the Dark
UNUSUAL PROSECUTION IN MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
The unusual prosecution of pushing a handcart in tho city streets after dark -without a light, was made against Chung Lung in the Magistrate's Court at Palmerston North yesterday. After the charge had been explained to defendant, ho admitted that there was no light attached to the cart. Evidence was given by James Bevau, a labourer, of Eeilding, who told the Court that ho had been motoring in Botanical road, and had not noticed Lung and his cart until close to him. Witness swerved to avoid a collision and his ear went into a ditch, suffering extensive damage. A fine of £1 was imposed, with costs totalling 18s fid. Lung protested to tho constablo who was explaining tho procedure to him, that ho was unable to find the money on the spot. “That’s all right,” said tho constable. “Wo'll meet you again.”
