Feilding Methodist Men's Fellowship
The first devotional meeting of the Feilding Methodist Men’s Fellowship was held at the schoolroom on Sunday morning, October 4, at 10 a.m., under the chairmanship of the president, Air H. S. Tate. There was a very good attendance. After the devotional exercises, the president welcomed the speaker, the Rev. A. N. Scottcr, 8.A., of St. Paul’s, Palmerston North, who gave an interesting and inspiring address on the subject of “Reading. " Air Scotter based his remarks on an appropriate passage from St. Paul’s Epistle to Timothy. The speaker indicated how, in ancient times, the compilation of records of an historical or religious nature was a difficult matter and mentioned the methods used by the Jews in regard to the use and disposal of their sacred writings. lie spoke of the difficulties of those earlitfr days compared with modern times in the matter of reading, and the wonderful benefit conferred on mankind by the invention of printing. Reference was mado to tho influence exerted by books—how they opened new worlds to tho reader —brought distant scenes near and much of the world’s knowledge within reach. He instanced the case of the late Judge Alpers, who, by Teading, fitted himself to teach others and pave tho way to a very successful life.- Aiention was mado of tho value, educational and recreational, of the great novels of last century, and lastly, Air Scotter spoke of the Bible, tho greatest of all books. The speaker dwelt on tho influence of the Bible, its inspiration and the wealth of wisdom to be found within its pages and urged his listeners to read and study tho Bible and thus increase in knoivlcdge, in breadth of view, and Christian experience.
On Friday evening, November 20, the fellowship will meet to hear an address by Mr C. H. Sayers, M.A., of Feilding.
