Sports Pavilion at Boys' High School

OPENING CEREMONY PERFORMED. The new sports pavilion at tho Palmerston North Boys’ High School fvas formally handed over to the school by the Parents’ Association on Saturday. Unfortunately the wet weather curtailed proceedings and compelled tho abandonment of the sons versus fathers cricket match. Mr. A. A. Langley, chairman of the Parents' Association, asked the Board of Governors’ acceptance of the gift and at tho same time returned thanks to Mr. G. G. Wilson who had designed and supervised tho erection of the structure. 110 also complimented the builder, Mr. Seward. Mr. M. H. Oram, chairman of the Board of Governors, thanked the Parents’ Association for their magnificent gift. Mr. J. Hodgens, M.P., was then called upon to declare tho building open. He referred to the fact that tho Parents’ Association, with a subsidy of £99, had erected a pavilion costing over £3OO. It was a wonderful ellort. Although Governments might come and go with different ideas about taxation, here was a body of people who had been leady to tax themselves still further m order to provide additional facilities for sport and learning. It showed how the people valued education. Mr. Hodgens said he Lad the pleasuro in Wellington ot listening to Viscount Elibank’s address to the conference of Empire Chambers of Commerce and tho latter had drawn attention to the problem of the illiterate peoples of Europe. Mr. Hodgens said ho mentioned this to draw a con trust to tho pledge of the present Government of New Zealand to bring secondary and higher education witlun the reach of everybody. Mr. J. Murray, rector, spoke of sport and what it meant in school life. He thanked the Parents’ Association for the gift and co-operation. Afternoon tea was served.
