The State and Oil
ARGENTINE DICTATORSHIP A Government monopoly in oiT, together with a complete State dictatorship in the oil industry has been proclaimed by simple, decree and has aroused a storm of protest not only from the parties directly affected but from those who oppose the anactment of any such measure except by Parliament.
The decree in question deprives the private oil companies of the right to -Import petroleum and its by-products, and grants the sole concession to do so to the State oil fields, which entity will decide what proportion shall be allotted to each firm. The export of oil is also prohibited. The preamble to this drastic ukase declares that such action has been rendered necessary in view of the fact that oil imports in 1935 were double those of the previous year, and that such remarkable increases were out of all proportion to any increase in home consumption, and that these considerations led to the conclusion that the private companies contemplated a dumping campaign and cut-throat competition with the Government oil fields.
