Awapuni Track Work CANDIDATES JOE OTAKI SENT AGAINST WATCH CONDITIONS VEEY PLEASANT Tho weather was delightfully fine and the tracks in good order lor work at Awapuni yesterday morning. Although the programme was a comparatively light one, the trials of horses engaged at Otaki make it a fairly interesting one. Mirth (E. Pease,y) and Gold Nymph (S. Andorson) who are both entered for the Maori Racing Club's meeting, were partners in a four-furlong scamper and Gold Nymph was in front at the post after being clocked to run the distance in 53 secs. Alloa (S. Anderson) was galloped six furlongs and ho moved smoothly all through, requiring 42 2-ssccs for the last throe furlongs. Round Score (C. Thomson), who has been entered for the Ling Memorial, was galloped six furlongs with Hunting Lodge (S. Anderson) and the former finished strongly the bost part of a length to the good. They were timed to complete in 1.23 2-5. Hunting Lodge has been entered for tho Hcma Te Ao Handicap at Otaki. Two moro Awapuni candidates for Otaki, Severe (W. J. .Broughton) and Lavish (S. Andorson), wore associated over live furlongs. Severe was first away but Lavish quickly closed the gap to lead into tho straight. Severe finished well but Lavish kept the advantage to tho post. • Their first two furlongs took them 2G, and the full distanco 1.7. Miss Pango (S. Anderson), who is engaged at Auckland, had Padnos (W, J. Broughton) as a companion in a workout over a mile. They were not required to do their best and completed in 1.54, both going well. Nightrunner (S. Anderson), who is also entered for the Huntors’ Steeplechase at Auckland, had Taumau (W. J. Broughton) to go with him in a fivefurlong flutter, and there was not much between thorn at the finish after taking 1.7. Taumau is entered for the Mema Hack at Otaki. Finnesko (Anderson), another candidate for Otaki, was sprinted five furlongs, his companion being Old Surrey. Finnesko set tho paco for the journey and he was well clear half-way down tho straight. Old Surrey was shaken up over tho last bit and ho improved his position considerably. Finnesko, however, was bowling along smoothly, being clocked to run tho five in a tick bettor thun 1.7. Laughing Chief (Anderson) appears to be none the worse for his outing under silk at Marten. Ho was associated with Wild Flower (Broughton) m an easy five furlong “pipe opener” whicn took them 1.13 3-5. Two- more youngsters, Crooner (Anderson) and Buffer (Broughton), ran three furlongs in bettor than 39, both moving attractively, with Laughing Chief in front at the post. Dawning Light (Broughton) was sent out to sprint threo furlongs down tho back stretch, but Broughton lost an iron and the filly slithered over four furlongs before she was pulled up. Dawning Light made a second appearance and this time everything went ” according to Hoyle” and Dawning Light finished her task in 39secs. Dawning Light and Dungarvan will have their next racing at the Wellington meeting and it is intended that they will race at the Canterbury meeting. PROM VARIOUS SOURCES While exercising in a paddock recently Friesland injured a knee rather seriously and O. Cox entertains little hope of his being ready to race before Christmas. The mishap was unfortu-. nate, as Friesland was making excellent progress and giving promise of making an early return to form. Despito the fact that Pakanui had the welter of 9st. 41b. up in the Flying Handicap at Napier Park on Saturday, he ran a great race, which his party fully expected him to do, as on the morning of the raco he covered half a mile in very fast time. Over the last bit the poundage told its tale, as ho failed to reach Lavina. who had been registering excellent efforts. Naturally, after his third placing to Icing and Sigurd in tho Debutante Stakes, at Wanganui, Screen Star saw a short price in the Prince of Wales Handicap at Napier Park. It was quite justified, as ho won in convincing stylo from Money Raid, a half-sister by Night Raid to Tray Bit. Screen Star had no bother in his task, and when asked to assert his power did so in an attractive fashion. RACING FIXTURES. Oct. 3—Kurow J.C. Oct. 3 —Otaki Maori R.C. A KAMEALL BRACKET On tho strength, of tho two-yoar-old unofficial trials at Caulfield a week or two back, Mr. W. B. Komball would seem to have a couple of smart youngsters in Lady Qucx and Sunny Moru, each winning a heat. Tho former, who is by Lord Quox from tho Boniform mare Miss Wayward, made fastest time in any licnt, beating live opponents over half a mile in Cllsccs. Sunny Morn is a colt by Siegfried from the Capo Horn—Ennca mare Enmity/ and by Aerial Post. Lion Hunt and Lanajinska wero unplaced in tho second division, won by Radiogram. Lion nunt met with serious interference. Cyrillian and Royal Helena were unplaced in, the Tkree-Yoar-Old Handicap, won by Pahonham. Golden Chance finished second in the Clarendon Handicap won by Cognac. IN THE WEST The racing season opened in Western Australia a fortnight ago with the Goldfields circuit at Kalgoorlie. On tho second day one of the winners was the Now Zealand-bred Dainty Verse, who scored narrowly but gamely in the Spring Handicap, 1± miles. Dainty Verse is a four-year-old chestnut mare by Iliad from the Abssurd—Valerie mare Isa, a close relative of Koremoana, Lady Cavendish, Lady Bentinck (dam of Golden Promise), etc. METIIVEN TKOTS.
