Marlborough Win Against Canterbury Colts
Per Press Association, BLENHEIM, Last Night. In a fairly evenly contested game Marlborough defeated Canterbury colts by 19 points to 11. Tho match was played under good conditions though thore was a stiff breeze blowing downfield. In the first spell the scores were even, but the home side had tho better of the second half, at one stage leading 14 —3. For Marlborough tries were stored by Robinson (2;, Brown and Hoare, Lane converting two, and kicking a penalty goal. Canterbury’s points were a try by Sandcrcock, converted by Thompson, and penalty goals by Thompson and White.
Payne Trophy Match LEADING CHRISTCHURCH AND DUNEDIN TEAMS DRAW. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Last Night. In the Payno trophy match between tho premier Rugby teams of Christchurch and Dunedin, Sunnysido and Southern drew, the score being 14 points all. The gamo was played as a curtain-raiser to the Test match. Ashburton Beat South Canterbury Per Press Association. ASHBURTON, Last Night. Ashburton defeated South Canterbury 19 —G after a close and hardfought game iu which there were few spectacular movements. There was little between the teams in the first half, but in the second the South, playing with tho wind, had a territorial advantage. Scorers lor Ashburton were Doig and Yessey (tries), Vesscy and McKenzie converting. For South Canterbury Ryan scored a try and Morrison kicked a penalty.
Tairawhiti Hold Prince of
Wales Cup
Per Press Association. GISBORNE, Last Night. The annual match for the Prince of Wales Cup, the premier trophy of the Maori Rugby in New Zealand, played at Ruatoria, East Coast, yesterday between a team representing tlie Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay and East Coast districts and known as Tairawhiti and a team representing Auckland, North Auckland, and Waikato, Bay of Plenty and King Country and know as Tai Tokerau. The match resulted in a win for the holders, Tairawhiti, by 22 points to 14. The ground was in good order and thero was a largo attendance. The Tai Tokerau forwards won the majority of tho scrums and the backs got away frequently, but the inside backs did not have the polish of Tairawhiti. Panapa (half), Brown (wing thrCe-quarter) and White, Wurdley and Nathan were most prominent for Tai Tokerau. Pepere (centre). Jackson (full-back) and Rogers and Lockwood were the most outstanding for Tairawhiti, Jackson’s line kicking being a feature of tho game. Tries were scored for Tairawhiti by Lockwood (2), Pepero (2), Rogers and Greening, two being converted by Pepere. Wordley and White scored for Tai Tokerau, Brown converting one SfllS also kicking-, three penalties,
