PERSONALITIES
Because of ill-health, Mr P. Hally has retired from the position of Conciliation Commissioner in Auckland. He is to bo succeeded by Mr R. E. Price, Inspector of Factories.
Mrs. Crocombe, of Musselburgh, Dunedin, will celebrate her 102nd birthday to-day. She arrived in Otago in 1552 by the ship Stately and has resided m the province ever since. She married shortly after her arrival Dr. Joseph Crocombe, the first doctor to settlo in Otago. She enjoys good health, is alert in manner and still takes a keen interest in current events.
The retirement is expected shortly to be announced, to take effect from the end of the year, of Professor Hugh Mackenzie, M.A. (St. Andrew's) of the Chair of English Language and Literature at Victoria University College, Wellington. One of tho college’s four foundation professors, Mr. Mackenzie’s retirement will sever another connection of tho college with the year it opened, 1599, and the lone remaining member of tho original professorial board ■will then be Professor J. Rankine Brown.
