THE FINANCES. The treasurer, Mr J. Hutton, reported to Saturday’s meeting of tho Pahiatua County Council:— Under tho heading of general receipts tho amount received to dato for the year amounts to £3078 14s 4d, as. against £-1020 Is 4d for tho same period of last year, a decrease of £941 7s. Expenditure to date for the current financial year amounts to £10,048 12s 2d, as against £U,202 5s 3d for last year, a dccreaso of £1153 13s Id. The credit balanco brought forward from tho current financial year was £1075 8s 3d, as against £2774 for the year 1935, a decrease of £1698 I.ls 9d. Tho debit cusli book balance at date is £5594 9a 7d, as against £4408 3s lid at tho same period last year, an increase in indebitedness of £I4SO 5s Bd. As you will noto from tho bank reconciliation statement, the county fund account at tho bank is overdrawn to tho extent of £7225 10s Gd, inclusive of outstanding cheques. The amount of accounts placed on the pay sheet for payment to-day amounts to £3515 4s, which will increase our indebitedness to £10,740 14s Gd. The limit of overdraft arranged for the current year is £BOOO, so it will now be necessary to approach your banker for further temporary accommodation. There are certain outstanding cash assets by way of subsidy on highway and public works amounting to £1270 13s lOd, and tho sum of £llsO 0s 2d duo by the loan account to the county fuud account, but as theso items arc not available at tho moment, it will be necessary to obtain the bank's consent to further overdraw in the meantime.

I have to report that tho valuations of land, which became effective by Order-in-Council from the 31st March last, have not yet been received from the Valuation Department. The continued delay is causing much inconvenience and is the main cause in having to seek further overdraft accommodation with your bank. In previous years rates demands have been issued prior to this date, but it is impossible to forecast wheu rates for tne current year will be demanded. The delay in supplying this information has also meant that the council's application to tho Local Government Loans Board for its sanction to raise a loan of £4900 for bridges has been held up pending tho information necessary to compute the rates as security.
