Weights lor the first day of tho Taranaki and Egrnont-Wanganui Hunt Club's combined meeting on August i'l and 29 have been declaini by t:iu nandlcapper, Ur. 11. Coyle, as follows: TRIAL HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE, of £SO; about it miles.

ANOTHER GOVERNMENT CUT. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 17. Excluding amusement tax, the Government will receive £13,680 from tho Canterbury Jockey Club as taxation on the Grand National Meeting. Details are:—Totalisator tax, £7256; dividend tax', £6345; stakes tax, £75. A QUEENSLAND INQUIRY. BRISBANE, Aug. 16. The stewards opened an inquiry into the running of High Speech in the Ascot Handicap at the Ascot Racing Club’s Meeting yesterday. Dudley Reid, a stable hand employed by the trainer, Shean, informed the stewards that a week ago he was offered £l5O to £2OO if he would “stop” High Speech yesterday. Shean is definitely of the opinion that the horse was “got at.” The inquiry was adjourned.

WOMEN LIKE PONY RACING. Pony racing in England is strongly supported by women. On June 22, at Northoit Park, 20 women were represented by runners in the six races, and had two winners. The two principal races, the Northoit Summer Cup, of £3o‘o, and the Ritz Handicap Plate, of £IOO, were won by Major H. Wakefield, a well-known stage and screen actor. GOING STRONGLY IN ENGLAND. Lord Astor headed the list of winning owners in England at the close of the Ascot meeting. He was over £IOOO ahead of the Aga Ivhau, his total being £22,360 to the latter’s £21,331. Lord Derby was a good third, with £19,634, followed by Sir A. Bailey, £15,632. Lord Glancly, who invested so heavily in yearlings last season, had only £3787 to his credit, but his turn may come next year, when his purchases arc three-year-olds.

MUST TALK TO BE AH AUTHORITY.

According to one writer in the Sydney Referee, if you arc not always prepared to air your alleged knowledge oi' racing, you arc generally credited with knowing nothing. Nevertheless, it often strikes some of us who have been a lung timo at the game what a lot of truth there is in the adage “(Silence is golden.” When you listen to the remarkab'e opinions expressed by some men who regard themselves as authorities —and as a result of constant talking, are accepted as such by some of their friends you cannot help wondering if they would gaiu any real depth of knowledge of racing if they were associated with it for a hundred years. WHERE GRASS TRACKS ARE PEW.

Turf tracks arc unusual in America, but "Arlington Park (Chicago) has one, and at the meeting held there last month three races were run on it each week. In mentioning this an exchange stated the track was one of the very few in America that offered turf racing.
