A Little Cow Shall Lead Them

INCIDENT OF BUSH DAYS OF PALMERSTON NORTH

During the course of his address to the Palmerston North Rotary Club yesterday Mr R. S. Abraham, who was relating a number of incidents connected with the days when Palmerston North was still surrounded by virgin bush, mentioned that three surveyors, who had gone on a shooting expedition in the direction of the Oroua had been lost for several days. In additoin to the surveyors who, incidentally, were without compasses, there was a Maori boy in tho party, also a milch cow wihich was to be the beast of burden. After reaching their far objective the “gunmen” started on the return journey but strayed from the “straight and narrow path.” For days they wandered blindly and food had run decidedly low before the Maori lad had a brain-wave which brought the surveyors back to civilisation. The lad took the halter off the cow. "Daisy” never hesitated. She took a bee-line for homo and the party was back at its camp within half an hour.
