... .(.British Official Wireless.) Received Sunday, 9.20 p.m. RUGBY, Aug. 14. The construction of the Dartford-Pur-fieet tunnel to provide a. link betAveen the north and south sides of the Thames estuary will bo begun within the next few weeks. The cost of the whole system is estimated at about £3,200,000. As the first step it is proposed to construct a pilot tunnel about 900 yards long with an internal diameter of 12 feet, also shield chambers and certain other ancillary works in connection with the main tunnel. The pilot tunnel and the ancillary Avork will cost approximately £300,000 and will provide information as to tho strata under the river at this point as well as on other matters which rvill be helpful in connection jwith the construction of the main tunnel which Avill be rather more than a mile in length. At present there is no facility for crossing the Thames by means of a bridge or tunnel below Blackwall tunccll Avhieh is three miles from the mouth of the Thames estuary. Tho distance between Blackwall and the site of the proposed tunnel is about 12 miles.
