England’s Big Score in Test

HAMMOND’S DOUBLE CENTURY,

United Press Association—Bv Electric Telegraph.—Copy right. Received Sunday, 9.50 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 15.

The weather was ideal and the wicket perfect for the Test between India and England. The Indians included Jilanband Hussain to strengthen tho batting in place of C. S. Nayudu aud Meheromji. England won the toss aud opened with Barnett and Fagg. The latter, playing defensively at a ball wide on the off, snicked it into the hands of the wicketkeeper. Hammond began shakily and survived two leg appeals. Thereafter he was steady although not brilliant. Seventy-one were put on in the first, hour. Barnett played a patchy innings and in attempting a pull lie was out leg before. Twelve thousand were present after lunch. Leyland was long anchored at 13. Mushtaquaii left the field with a leg injury. Leyland, who constantly drove Amar Singh, tried t.hc same with Missar and was bowled. Although Hammond continued to play crisp and forceful strokes, ho had lucky escapes. Worthington did most of the scoring. Hammond’s 200 took 170 minutes. He was dropped by Wazarali when 90. The pair added 290 iu 130 minutes, eventually doing almost as they liked with the bowling. Hammond finally dragged one from Missar on to his wicket. He hit 30 fours and the partnership was worth 200. Two overs later Worthington shared the same fate. He hit 19 fours. After this brilliant work behind the stumps by Hussain, who did not concede a bye, was the outstanding feature of the game.
