FIRST QUARTER’S FIGURES UP ALL ROUND
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 12. Tho Public Accounts for the three months ended June 30 arc published in the Gazette to-day. The revenue for the period totalled £5,523,634 compared with £4,921,775 in the corresponding period of the previous year. The expenditure totalled £5,559,902 compared with £5,391,779 in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Compared with the first quarter of last year, on the revenue side, Customs duty increased front £1,314,442 in 1935 to £2,154,008 this year, the beer duty from £149,653 to £176.051, the sales tax from £532,039 to £709,240, highways taxation from £525,240 to £643,694, and stamp and death duties from £524,044 to £735,162. Income tax decreased from £247,977 to £213,052 and interest fell from £530,652 to £495,564. On the expenditure side, debt services decreased from £2,205,190 to £2,009,604; highways increased from £222,850 to £645,284, defence increased from £102,745 to £124,610 and social services increased from £1,470,930 to £1,591,30-4.
