Lawn Tennis in the Manawatu

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE HOLDS ‘‘WASH UP” MEETING.

Mr C. C. Yates was in the chair at last evening’s meeting of tho management committee of the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association. Others preseut were Miss B. Horn, Messrs J. Murphy, D. I. Eobertson, J. Christie, L. Keicheubach and L. Plimmcr (secretary). An 'apology was received from Mr J. T. McDonald. The South Canterbury Association forwarded a circular letter in connection with their efforts to securo the 1937 championships for Timaru. The circular stressed the suitability of Timaru for a championship meeting and asked for support for their application. ' The chairman explained that tho council had already recommended that the championships should bo held at Timaru, but Auckland, which had not known in time to instruct delegates how they should vote, now wished that the resolution of thu council be rescinded and the venue of the next championships be re-considered. Auckland have forwarded a remit to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Association that associations tie advised not less than live weeks before the council is to deal with tho matter of the location of the New Zealand championship tournaments. it was agreed that this was a reasonable request aud one which should be supported. It was also decided that Manawatu should support tho present intention to hold the 1930-37 championships at Timaru, but in the event of the question being re-opened, the Mauawatu delegates will be instructed to vote foi Christchurch as the venue. Among tho remits to be considered at the annual general meeting of the New Zealand Association in Wellington on August 20 is one from the Wellington Association asking that entries in New Zealand championship events bo limited to: Men’s singles 32, ladies’ singles 111, men’s doubles 10, ladies’ doubles 10, mixed doubles 10. The chairman remarked that they would go by the ranking list aud cut out all others. Mr Robertson considered it was hardly fair.

Miss Horn suggested that tennis players would eventually lose interest in the National championships if the entries were restricted as recommended Mr Robertson: An improving player might like to have a go at the Now Zealand championships but a drastic restriction would not prove much of an encouragement to him. Mr Reichenbach was prepared to favour tho principle of limiting entries provided those players eventually taking part be selected by an elimination tournament. It was pointed out that an influx of overseas players would further reduce the possibility of New Zealanders taking part. Mr Pliminer thought the time had hardly arrived for such a drastic limitation of entries. Air Reichenbach and Mr Christie moved “that this association is strongly against the suggested limitation of entries.” This was carried. In regard to the proposal that all players entered for tho championships shall be entered by the association of which the player was a member, it was resolved to leave the question to the delegates, who will vote as they think fit. Report and Balance Sheet. The report and balance sheet to be submitted to the annual meeting next week were submitted by the secretary and approved. The balance sheet disclosed a very satisfactory state of affairs. Air Yates gave notice of his intention to move at the annual meeting that the rules bo altered aud that the annual meeting be held in October instead of in August, his contention being that it would be better for fill concerned. Ho added that the maiu argument against this “hardy annual” was that the association should get the annual meeting over before the annual general meeting of the New Zealand Association.
