Grand National Meeting Opens To-day

Good Fields With Winners Well Concealed

WIN AND PLACE BETTING The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting opens at Riccarton to-day with the New Zear land Grand National Steeplechase over three and a-half miles and the Winter Cup as the principal firstday attractions. For the past week or two the course has been heavy and there has been little chance ot a drying-out since the abandonment of the Christchurch Hunt Club’s fixture, tne form at which usually ' throws some light on tne chances oi horses engaged at the Granu National meeting. Hilly Hoy has pride of place with 11.5 and ho is required to concede Diamond bibs. Hiilj Xioy knows all mere is to know ahem, the Riccarton country and his roporn in the Grand National is a good ono—a win and two thirds. Hilly Hoy in reported to bo lit and he will take a power of beating to-duy. Diamond is a brilliant jumper and his win in the Wellington ,steeplechase suggests tliai ho will be tho toughest proposition in tho race. Diamond is rejiorted to be in tho pink of condition. Royal Lunouu has been schooling well at Riccarton and he should be well forward for the raco that is in front of him. Ono thing that should bo remembered, however, is that Royal Lunond does not appear to like tho Riccarton country. Forest Glow did not show his true form at tho recent Wellington meeting, but he has fresnened up since and it is on the cards that ho will take a more prornin cut part in to-day's race. Runchestown uas nad a fairly strenuous preparation on the track, but he has been under a cloud becauso of unsouudness ana this, and tho fact that he lacks racing condition, may keep him well down in tho betting. Rahu twice ran into thiru place at Wellington, but his form was not good enougu to suggest that he will lead this field homo. Manawatu, however, lias come into iayour since his good form at Treutham and his recent track form suggests him as the likeliest of tho ligntweights. High Speed is another improving horse and he, also, will command a goodly measure of support. The totalisator investments, however, are fairly certain to point to Diamond, Royal .Limond, Manawatu.

Riders in the G.N. Steeples are as under: — Hilly Hoy: AV. Rennie. Diamond: R. K. Smith. Royal Limond; R. Healo. Forest Glow: W. J. McDowell. Funcuostowu: H. Turner. Fahu: G. Riugway. Manawatu: A. McDonald. High Speed: V. Langtord. The Winter Gup will xollow- the Enfield Wtoopiecnase and for this there is a Held of eighteen. Queen of Kong is lop-weight and as she has wen a Weinngton Gup and Great Autumn Handicap sue cannot bo lext out of calculations on tne score of weight. Who has not raced since Eastor, but reports suggest she has been working well. Epns won the Winter Gup last year and he scored decisively over a milo at Treutham. This effort pointed to Him as a good prospect in to-day's race, but a sligut injury and an mterrujition in liis preparation havo not improved his chances. Goueert Fitch won the Great Easter Handicap, but ho is under a bit of a cloud through soreness. Fairweather is in good conditiou, also Adalene, and Adaleno is likely to be one of tho favoured division. She was fourth in tho Winter Gup last year and she raced well at Trentham so that she should bo in great heart for today’s race, Fonty won decisively at Trentham and this promoted hack has gone on the right way since. Fonty will have plenty of friends to-day and ho can be expected to bo in the firing line when the whips begin to crack. Davolo has given an indication of a return to top form. Boomerang will be one of the best fancied of those on the lower half of the card, but Metal Bird, The Burgeon and Mount Val are others which help to confuse the issue. The issue appears to be more open than usual and there is a very big chance of a “boil over.’’

Taking a line through recent form, however, three that may make most appeal are Epris, Adalene, Metal Bird, Horses likely to be fancied in the other races aro as follow: Trial Hurdles: Saltspray, The Smuggler, Havering. Paparua Handicap: Greek Gold, Bay Duke, Dollar Bill.' Jumpers’ Plat: Jolly Beggar, Clarion Call, Silk Sox. . Cashmcro Plate: Sir Hugh, Autumn Wind. Enfield Steeplechase: Royston, Nocturnus, Thuriha.
