German Missionary Works Among Aborigines
LANGUAGE ALMOST PORGOTTEN After having spent half a century among the aborigines in Capo York Peninsula the Bcv. G. H. Schwartz, who recently travelled to Brisbane to attend a Lutheran convention, found that ho had almost forgotten his native language. Going to Queensland from. Germany when ho was 19 years of ago Mr Schwartz went direct to Capo York Peninsula to the mission station that has been his homo ever since, and during the 50 years that ho has beeu in Queensland he has only addressed, two white congregations, tho second being a recent Lutheran convention.
Mr Schwartz has taught the aborigsine to clear and cultivate their land, to grow coconuts, to build their own houses, and to erect bridges over creeks. He says that they are very intelligent and aro excellent workers.
The settlement, at which there are about 300 aborigines, covers an area of several hundred square miles, and at present can only bo reached by a long journey with pack horses from Cooktown. •
