Dannevirke Golf Course Record Twice Broken

tournament opened UNDER IDEAL CONDITIONS

lIORNABROOK AND REID

RECORD 71’s

With the course in excellent order and brilliant weather, the conditions could not have been improved upon for the opening of the Dannevirke Golf Club’s annual tournament. Close on a hundred players were sent away by the official starter and the features of the qualifying rounds were the cards returned by the New Zealand amateur title-holder, J. P. Hornabrook, and L. A. Reid, from Waipukurau, both of whom broke the course record with scores of 71. Par for the Dannevirke course is 73. Hornabrook, with rounds of 71 and 75 and an aggregate of 146, headed the qualifying list for the Southern Hawke's Hay championship, and next was Reid with 150. The leading aggregates were as under:—

The trophy for the best gross aggregate was won by liornabrook, while that for the net aggregate was won by Keith Siduclls (Paluatua) 152—42—140.

JUNE BOGEY HANDICAP AT HOKOWHITU.

SCOEING WAS “NOT SO GOOD.’’

The official competition at Hokowhitu on Saturday was the Juno bogey handicap and the "Colonel’ ’ had, matters all his own way, O. H. Williams being the only player who did not strike his colours. The course was in great order, but there was a tricky wind which did not make things any easier with approach shots to the well-trapped greens. The leading scores were as under:—

A Grade. O. H. Williams, square. S. A. Goldingham, 2-down E. E. Mabin, 3-down. W. J. Knights, 3-down. L. F. Speechley, 3-down. W. W. Smith, 3-down. N. H. Sinclair, 3-down. B Grade.

A. A. Ashby, 1-down. W. G. Eutherfurd, 2-down. J. H. Eose, 3-down. G. A. Eobertson, 3-down. King’s Birthday Tournament at Hokowhitu. The Manawatu Golf Club’s annual

benefit tournament will bo held at Hokowhitu to-morrow. In the morning there will be 4-ball and singlo bogey handicaps for the men and the ladies, and, in conjunction a teams match. In the afternoon there will be a mixed foursome. Events are all post entry.

Scrambles Bad lor Betting. Tho story is told of a sad man—one of a 10-ball scramble —who offered to bet the others that there would bo no two’s at the ninth. He had overlooked tho fact that the Battle of Waterloo had been won on tho putting fields of Eden, also that the Iron Duke was one of the scramble. This happened at Hokowhitu on Saturday and the bet was taken in several places. Tho best of tho tee shots was at least 14 feet from the pin and throe's-at-the-best were indicateu. Being a scramble worth nine piastres to the winner, each in turn sacrificed safety-first methods in an endeavour to get tho two. This went on until there were only two left with a chance. One of them was the man who laid against a two and the other was the “Iron Duke” (J. i\ Field). Putting first, tho betting man —not frightfully anxious—hit the ball any old how, but was lucky, or unlucky, 1 that it snicked off a ham-bone, parked on the green by .Sally, and dived into the hole like a startled rabbit. Ho had lost the bet about the two’s, but now stood a chance of winning the scramble. Ho might just as well have saved his hopes up for another time, however, for the “Iron Duke’’ stepped quickly up to his ball and, without taking sight, stroked it smoothly into the hole to “burn” the scramble.

CANADIAN FCURSOMES AT TE MATAI.

The Canadian foursomes played at Te Matai on Sunday afternoon drew a largo number of entries. Playing conditions were excellent and many good cards were handed in, the best scores being as follows: —Mrs. Wilson aud Mr. Ciochctto 36, Miss Brown and Mr. Stacey 36, Mrs. Hutchins and J. Ramsay 38, Mrs. Garner and Mr. Garner 38, Mrs. Ciochctto and Mr. Wilson 39, Mrs. Bennett and Mr. Cater 39, Miss Day and Mr. Hadden 39, Miss Park and Mr. McKay 39.

To-morrow (King’s Birthday) bogej matches have been arranged for both men and women players in the morning. In the afternoon a mixed foursome will take place. A small entrance fee will bo charged to augment club funds.
