MANAWATU'S CHALLENGE FAILS

Hockey Shield Match at the Show POLISHED DISPLAY BY AUCKLAND Vv., In the principal oval attraction at the Winter Show on Saturday, Auckland retained the New Zealand Hockey Challenge Shield by three goals to one. The weather was fine and tho ground in good order, but a high wind blowing tho length of tho held proved a handicap to each side when asked to

faco it. With the wind at their back, Auckland held the upper hand in the first half, and tho hoine forwards had few opportunities of showing their ability. Tho visitors’ first goal came after about 15 minutes’ play, and the other two within a few minutes.- The second half saw Manawatu with tho advantage of wind and sun, more than holding their own, and they, obtained the only goal of tho spell. The visitors gave a polished display of stickwork and their combination was pretty to watch. As an attacking machine, Manawatu fell short of the Auckland standard; their forwards were equally as dangerous as the visitors’, but there seemed to be a lack of cohesion between them and the halves, who were unable to supply them with more of the ball. The teams wero as follow:—■ Manawatu. (Green and White.) Goal; H. Bonej Backs; Wj Sutton, K. Halves: M. E. Smith, P, Anthony (captain), W. Burne, Forwards: 3). O’Brien, E. Hoare, J. Morgan, K... Struthers, V. Turner, Auckland. * - £Black and White.), Goal: . I D, Anderson, j Backs: F, Clark, H. Jones. Halves: W. Boss, S. Itobertson, L. H. Watson. Forwards: L. Monteith (captain), L Boss, E. Boughton, G. Twigden, H. B. Lawry. Defending the town goal, Manawatu won the initial bully. Auckland worked into the homo team’s twenty-five, but a free hit for obstruction halted them. Sutton frustrated an attack by Auckland, who, however, camo again, and Lawry had a shot at goal, which was easily stopped by Bone. A couple of minutes later Bono conceded a corner, from which a shot was made at goal, but nothing resulted. The visitors continued to hold the upper hand, and Bone was twice called on to defend his goal. The Greens worked into Auckland’s half, but were pulled back for offside. Twigden had a shot at the net, but Bone deflected it outside. A minute later Bono beautifully saved a hot shot by an Auckland forward. The goalie later stopped another shot with his hand, but Monteith made no mistake with his return.

From the halfway bully, th© visitors went straight to the attack and Twigden. gave the custodian no chance, findthe net for Auckland’s second goal. A minute later Bono stopped another shot with his hands, but from a penalty comer Eoughton netted. Bone came out of his goal to atop another attack and found the line at the twenty-five. The home forwards got into Auckland’s circle, but the ball was there only a few seconds. From a roll-in the ball went to Turner, who sent across field to Hoare, who had a shot at the goal from a difficult angle, hitting the side of the net. An Auckland attack was stopped by Drinkwater, and half-time was called with the visitors still aggressive. In the second spell tho Greens went to the attack and Morgan had a shot; but Auderson saved. A minute later Auckland conceded a penalty corner and Morgan made another drive at me net, but his direction was faulty. The home side were now having more of a say in the game than in the first half. Turner and Struthers were associated in a move on Manawatu’s left wing, but tho ball went behind. Hoare had a shot from a centre by O’Brien, but tho goalio was equal to the occasion. Bono had to concede a penalty corner, but Auckland failed to turn it to account, and tho game swept to the other end. Hoare, Morgan, Struthers, and Turner were associated in a passing movement which ended with Turner finding tho net. The visitors attacked, but Sutton sent them back. Tho homo forwards got offside, but came again, and again over-eagerness cost them the advantage. Obstruction saw a penalty corner against Manawatu, but Auckland were unable to turn it to account. The final bell rang with the visitors on the attack. Tho umpires were Messrs H. McQuarrie (Auckland) and W. H. Wilson (Manawatu). Victoria College Defeats Massey College Victoria A defeated Massey Agricultural College by four goals to nil. Scorers for Victoria were Webb (2), Robinson- and Oram. The game was played at Karori Park, Wellington, in the course of the inter-’Varsity tournament.
