Napier Steeplechase Won by Strome

PASSION FLOWER’S SPRINT.

Per Press Association. NAPIER, Last Night. Tho Napior Park Racing Club’s gol den jubilee winter meeting commenced yesterday in fino weather. There was a largo attondanco, fair fields and good racing. Three out of the four starters in tho Napier Steeplechase jumped splendidly and kept in close order all the way, Strome winning by a neck under pressure.

The totalisator investments amounted ed to £4773 10s, as compared with £3SSS 10s on tho first day last year, tho increase being £6BB. Results:—

MOTEO HACK HURDLE HANDICAP, of £BS; 1} miles.

8 JOHN CHARLES, 10.11 (R. C. Milos) 1 4 Lord Hereford, 9.0 (Carroll) .. 2 7 Manifesto, 9.8 (Baker) 3 Also started: 3 Journet, 9 Emotion, 5 Curie, 2 Blue Boy, 1 Blue Tiger, 6 Count Willonyx, 11 Souchong, 10 Royal Bengal.

Souchong made the running for a mile, John Charles being next, then Manifesto, Blue Tiger, Lord Hereford and Curio at intervals. Journet was tailing the field. Half a mile from home John Charles went up to Souchong and at tho second-to last hurdle had wrested the lead from him. Manifesto, Lord Hereford and Curie were at the same time making a forward move. John Charles ran wide at .tho last hurdle, letting Lord Hereford up on the inside, but, straightened up again, John Charles drew out to win by a length. Manifesto was two lengths further away, just in front of Curie, fourth. Time, 2.53:}.

MALDEN SCURRY, of £6O; 5 furlongs. 2LE TOUQUET, 8.0 (Anderson) . 1 4 Master Hector, 8.7 2 5 Black Magic, 8.7 (Forsyth) .. 3 Also started: 15 Gascon, 9 Joy Bird, 13 Mahala, 3 Golden Ridge, 11 Mutunga, 1 Lucullus Lad, 13 Sunny Blonde 7 Iddo, 16 Inheritance, 12 Whistle Pinkie, 7 Essex, 6 Count Siegfried, 10 Marsyas. Following a good start, Lo Touquet Master Hector, Golden Ridge and Black Magic were always prominent. In the straight Lo Touquet took command, Black Magic also putting in a claim, and Lo Touquet won by two lengths, with a neck between second and third. Golden Ridge was fourth. Time, 1.5 4-5.

MEEANEE HACK HANDICAP, of . £7O; 6 furlongs.

4 HUNTER'S HORN, 9.1 (Fergus) 1 1 Royal Feast, 9.2 (Walsli) .... 2 3 Hunting Star, 9.0 (Atkins) .. 3 Also started: 5 Mata Hari, 2 Do Friend, 6 Helios, 7 Begorrah. After playing up for a time at the post, Hunter’s Horn finally got away in the lead and maintained this to the post. Hunting Star and Mata Hari wore in company in second place until the last furlong when Noyal Feast challenged and Hunter’s Horn hung on to win by a head. There were two lengths between second and third. Time, 1.19. NAPIER STEEPLECHASE, of £125; about 2i miles. 1 STROME, 9.7 (Webby) ...... 1 2 Dozie, 10.4 (Miles) 2 4 Kaokaoroa, 9.0 (Deslandes) .. 3 Also started: 3 Battleground, who ran round the first fence. There was a good race between the other three, all jumping well and taking the lead alternately. Strome was first over the last fence and he won in a punishing finish by a neck from Dozie. Kaokaoroa was four lengths away. Time, 5.59 4-5. LADIES’ PLATE HANDICAP, of £7O; 1£ miles. 2 TAHOMA, 10.12 (Mr. McPherson) 1 2 Tho Grasper, 12.2 (Mr. G. Beatson, Jnr.) 2 6 Wahine Nui, 10.7 (Mr. S. Monteitk) 3 Also started: 1 Sunny Sky, 4 Royal Shift, 6 Lyn Dhu. Wahine Nui led for-a mile, Lyn Dhu being second, Tahoma third and Tho Grasper next. In the straight Tin Grasper got a run on the inside through Wahine Nui running wide, but tho fin ish resulted m a win for Tahoma by a nose from Tho Grasper. Wahine Nui was three lengths away third and Sunny Sky fourth. Time, 2.19 1-5. . FLYING HANDICAP, of £100; . 6 furlongs. 3 , PASSION FLOWER, S.lO (Walsh) 1 2 Quake, 8.0 (Marsh) 2 4 Slippery, 9.3 (Atkins) ...... 3 Also started: 1 Bodyline, 0 Hunting Jay, 5 Lavina. Hunting Jay was fractious at the post and the field was sent off without him. Passion Flower, Bodyline and Quake w T as tho order for the first furlong and then Bodyline took the lead from Quake and Passion Flower. The last-named mado a good run in the straight and won by four lengths, there being two between second and third. Bodyline was a neck away fourth. Time, 1.16 2-5. SETTLERS’ HACK HANDICAP, of £BS; 1 mile. 4 MASTER CYKLON, S.II (C. Goulsbro) l 3 Blue Garter, 5.13 (Walsh) .... 2 7 Trailer, 8.5 (Young) 3 Also started: 1 Granvale, 2 Blygain. 5 Sybil Song, 6 Royal Dash. Trailer, Master Cyklon and Sybil Song was the order from the start and Master Cyklon caught Trailer at the home bend and won by a length and a-half. Blue Garter was half a head in front of Trailer. Blygain was fourth. An enquiry into alleged interference with Mata, Hari by Royal Feast during tho running of the Meeaneo Hack Handicap was adjourned till Tuesday.
