WELLINGTON, Last Night. A deep depression still lies to the east of the North Island, but its after affects have been' modified by a series of secondary depressions advancing across the South Tasman Sea, one of which is now moving on to southern New Zealand. An anti-cyclone covers Australia and the north Tasman Sea.
Winds: Strong but decreasing southwesterly north of New Plymouth and Napier; elsewhere north-westerly to westerly backing ■ shortly again in places to south-westerly, moderate but increasing, especially about Cook and Foveaux straits.
Seas (N.Z. waters); Rough between Castlepoint and East Cape, but decreasing; rough also north of Cape Egmont and about Foveaux strait; elsewhere moderate but rising south of Cape Egmont. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate to strong west to south-west winds, with rather rough 1 to rough seas.
Weather: Fair at first in tho eastern districts of the South Island and improving on the' cast coast of the NortH Island; otherwise weather changeable with scattered showers, especially in the western areas; ' some hail probable in the far south anu south-west. Temperatures cold.
