Control of Rugby In the Manawatu

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE DEALS WITH VARIOUS MATTERS. FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY. In the absence of the president (Mr A. M. Ongley), who was unable to attend, Mr J. A. Colqu'houn was voted to the chair at the meeting of the Manawatu Rugby executive committee last evening. Others present were Messrs J. R. Hardie, H. Bowler. A. F. Helleur, H. J. Hickey, H. A. Stone, P. O. Skoglund, E. Clevely, J. W. Smith, L. J. Plank and J. H. White (secretary). Apologies for absence were tendered on behalf of Messrs A. M. Ongley, K. W. Eglinton, E. W. Low, C. Pearse and L. G. Berry, who were granted leave of absence. Correspondence. The Otago Rugby Union, in connection with the question of replacements of injured players, advanced tho opinion that replacements should bo made during any period of the game and asked for Manawatu’s views so that a definito ruling could be made without delay. It was resolved, on the motion of Messrs Hardie and Smith, that Otago bo advised that Manawatu favoured replacements at any stago of tho game. The Lytton Street school committee applied for a grant towards the school’s Rugby equipment.—Referred to the Primary Schools’ Association. Horowhenua, in reply to Manawatu’s suggestion, approved of August 8 as tho date of the return gamo at Shannon. Tho Tiritea, Fitzherbert and Kairanga schools made application for footballs, ,tho requests being referred to the Primary Schools’ Association. The Feilding Hockey Association applied for tho use of Johnston park on Wednesday, August 12, for the purpose of playing the Fijian women’s tcuring team. It was resolved, without discussion, that tho ground be mado available for the hockey match. The Oroua sub-Union wrote to seo if the Manawatu Rugby Union would receive a deputation on Tuesday next to discuss and define the boundaries of the sub-union. It was decided to invite Oroua to send their deputation on Tuesday week, the reason being that no meeting was to be held on tho King’s Birthday. The Manawatu Rugby Referees’ Association submitted tho names of Messrs A. Gordon, A. Ward and G. Cooksley as referees eligible and available to control inter-provincial matches. —Resolved that tho names should be forwarded to tho New Zealand Rugby Union.

The secretary of the United Football Club forwarded advico that tho senior team was being withdrawn from the competition owing to the scarcity of players. For that reason the club asked to have N. Holden, N. McKenzie, T. Young and F. Withers re-graded from senior to junior, and to have J. Glastonbury transferred from Saturday to Wednesday football.—The requests were granted. Arising out of the United withdrawal, L. Findlay applied for a transfer to St. Patrick’s Club.—Granted, subject to the clearance from United. Mr Stone stated that United would offer no objection. Feilding Old Boys wrote, asking to have P. Vallanco re-graded to third grade status.—Granted, subject to tho clearance from Te Arakura.

Prom Saturday week, for four weeks, the starting times for all games are to be 1.45 and 2.45 p.m. When discussing the fixtures for Saturday w r eek, mention was made of the condition of the grounds at the back of tho stand at the Showgrounds, and it was generally agreed that these areas were not in fit order for football. It was then proposed that the St. Pat’s—Feilding A game set down for that day be played at Park road, but this was defeated on a show of hands. Later in tho meeting it was proposed that clubs be invited to forward their views about the back grounds at the Showgrounds and to indicate whether they would sooner play at Rugby park in preference to the numbers 2 and 3 grounds at the Showgrounds. This was carried without further discussion. Mr Clevely was appointed manager of the representative team to play Southern Hawke’s Bay and it was decided to ask the home union to appoint Mr L. Anderson as referee. Mr Clevely was also appointed manager for the team to play at Wanganui. Managers for the teams in the representative match at Rugby park next Saturday were appointed as follow: Mr P. 0. Skoglund (South) and Mr H. Bowler (North). Tho North will play in green and whito jerseys and tho South in colours. In regard to the players of tho now defunct United senior team, it was resolved that as the union is not again meeting before Saturday week, the matter of transfer applications be referred to tho president with power to act. Fixtures for Saturday. Fixtures, grounds and referees for Saturday next were approved as under:— Senior grade.—North v, South, No. 1 Rugby park, at 3 p.m. (Mr G. Cooksloy); Manawatu v. Southern Hawke’s Bay, at Dannevirke. Junior grade.—Old Boys v. United, No. 2 Rugby park, at 1.30 p.m. (Mr C. Taylor); Woodville v. Feilding Old Boys, No. 1 Johnston park, at 3 p.m. (Mr C. Eade); Kia Toa v. Massey College, No. 1 Rugby park, at 1.30 p.m. (Mr J. Hardi.e); St. Pat’s v. High School, No. 2 Rugby park, at 3 p.m. (Mr J. Pinfold); Bunnythorpe v. Te Arakura, Bunnythorpe, at 1.30 p.m. (Mr C. Pinfold). Third grade.—United v. Kia Toa, No. 4 Rugby park, at 3 p.m. (Mr R. Holdsworth); Old Boys v. Feilding, No. 2 Johnston park, at 3 p.m. (Mr C. Tucker); Feilding High School v. Woodville, Woodville, at 3 p.m. (Mr J. Baker); St. Pat’s v. Feilding Old Boys, Feilding High School grounds, at 3 p.m. (Mr C. Eglinton). Fourth grade. —High School v. Old Boys, No. 4 Rugby park, at 1.30 p.m. (Mr J. Burgess); Kia Toa v. Massey

College, No. 5 Rugby park, at 1.30 p.m. (Mr A. Neville). Fifth grade. —Technical A v. High School A, High School grounds, at 1.45 p.m. (Mr R. Akuira); Technical B v. Feilding Higi School, Technical grounds, at 1.30 p.m. (Mr B. Trow r ). Midgets.—Terraco End C v. College Street A, to be played during week.

REPRESENTATIVE TEAM TO PRACTISE AT FEILDING. The Manawatu representative Rugby team to play Dannevirke on Saturday will practiso on Thursday evening at Johnston park, Feilding, instead of at the High School grounds as announced previously’. Cars will leave from the secretary’s office at 7 p.m.
