Farm Worker’s Achievement

BUILDS UP OWN PEDIGREE HERD After thirteen years as a farm labourer, Mr J. W. C. Warrington started on his own account at Ileylields Farm, Stoke-on-Trent, some seven years. ago. His pedigree herd of British Freisians has already topped the thousand-gallon average, and one cow of his own breeding has given 15,000 lb. in a lactation. During' the latter part of his “working” days Mr Warrington, who is only thirty-four, rented twenty-six acres on which ho kept a few dairy cows and young stock in his spare time. He now has forty-eight acres of first-class grassland which he has considerably improved. He has also workod on the buildings. Butter-l'at Also. In 1034-55 the Hevlields herd won the Delta Cup, being first in the county for small herds with an average of 1,023 gallons for ten full-time cows. Nor has butter fat been neglected, individual tests of over 4$ per cent, being recorded, while one home-bred animal has actually tested G. 9 per cent. One of Mr Warrington’s achievements is the building of a fifty foot bridge over the Trent, which runs through his holding and formerly necessitated a lengthy detour. Three railway metals, each weighing 11 ewt., and over five tons of sleepers have been used, the centre uprights being made from an oak tree split down the middle. The palings and fencing were also hewn from timber of the farm, Mr Warrington’s only help being a boy and a horse.
