Halcombe

From Our Own Correspondent Last Wednesday afternoon the local ladles’ hockey team played Te Hiuri (Kakariki) on the Halcombe Recreation Ground. The ground was still in a very rough state with tufty grass and an uneven surface. Considering the, condition of the ground the first spell was quite Interesting, ' the half-time whistle finding the visitors leading by one goal to nil. In the second spell, however, they put on two more goals while the locals were unable to open their account, chiefly owing to tho excellent defence of the visiting goalie, Mrs. R. Williams. This played stopped several hot shots in mid-air and but for her the results would probably have been very different. The game was refereed by Alessrs. R. Searancke and Cole. After the game the visitors were entertained at afternoon tea in the supper room of the Jubilee Hall. For Halcombe Misses AI. Bush and G. Wischnowsky played a sterling game. The standard oi play will never improve till the ground is put in better order. Jubilee Meeting. A meeting of old pupils and all others interested in the school jubileo was held in the school on Wednesday evening, there being some 20 or 30 in attendance Air. W. McLennan, who occupied the chair, acquainted those present with what had been done up to date. He pointed out that tho sixtieth anniversary of tho opening of the Halcombe School would fall in July of 1937. Previous meetings of old pupils had been held and a committee had been formed to commence the task of going through the old rolls of the school with a view to ascertaining the whereabouts of the three thousand odd old pupils who have passed through the school in the past 60 years. He realised that to carry the jubilee celebrations through successfully, they would need the co-operation of all sections of the community. The meeting had been called primarily to get the public represented on the committee. Mr. E. W. Cowdrey inquired whether the jubilee was to be a purely school affair, or whether it embraced the district as a whole, irrespective of whether the people were old pupils or not. Air. McLennan said that it was essentially a school affair, but could not be carried out without everybody’s help. He pointed out that when further representatives were added to the committee it was the intention of the secretary (Air. R. Hughes) and himself to vacate their offices in order to allow the committee to select its own officers. Some discussion followed as to who should formulate plans for the jubilee, tho present meeting or the committee to bo elected. , , Air. E. R. Long (head teacher) submitted that the committee should make a definlto plan for the jubilee and later present it for approval to a general meeting. Air Cowdrey moved and Air. L. Siegel seconded that the present meeting should lay down definite plans, in the rough, to guide the committee in its work. This motion was carried unanimously. On the chairman and secretary leaving their seats, Air. E. VV. Cowdrey, chairman of tho school committee, presided-and Air, ,T.. Wischnowsky was elected secretary and Air. S. Anderson treasurer. The following tentative programme was approved by the meeting:— Tho jubilee celebrations to occupy three days, to be in Alarch, 1937, on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Firsr Day: Reception and ceremony al the school before lunch followed by jubilee luncheon or dinner. Ball to be held in the Jubilee Hall in the evening. Second Day: Procession to recreation ground in early afternoon to be followed by sports, burlesquo football match, Concert to be held in the evening. Third Day: Thanksgiving services. Tho matter of forming a proposed old pupils’ association was then discussed at length, it being agreed that such an organisation was desirable to provide funds for the jubilee. Those old pupils present then went, into conference and decided that a subscription of 2s 6d be imposed. It was agreed that there shou d be two badges for the jubilee, one for old pupils with tho school colours, yellow a.nd black attached, and a similar badge with a blue ribbon for those who were not old pupils. VVischnowsky reported that a sum'of over £5 had been realised at the dance held recently, it being considered that this amount would b© ample for present purposes. It was resolved that a banking account be opened to be operated on by the secretary and treasurer. A further suggestion that a sub-committee be appointed to investigate and write up the history of the school, met with unanimous approval. The question of what should bo done with any surplus funds, should there be any, was then discussed, it being agreed that, any amount up to £25 he given to the school committee, the disposal of any further funds to bo decided by a public meeting. A large number of local residents was then appointed to the general committee. .. . . . . The first committee meeting is to oe held on July 1. Hockey Club Dance.
