Manawatu Scottish Society
INGLESIDE EVENING On Saturday evening the first meeting of the year of the Manawatu Scottish Society was held in the Orange hall in Lombard street. The capacity of the hall proved excellent for the occasion, being unusually comfortable with its seating accommodation. Mr G. Allen w r as M.C. and kept the items and competitions moving at a brisk pace. There was a large number present. Mrs Len Smith (accompanied by Mr Smith) and Mr A. Stewart (accompanied by Miss Thompson) gave of their best in vocal solos, they having previously been well received by local audiences. Mr W. J. Bobertson (accompanied by Mr F. McLacklan) was heartily applauded for a novelty item. Piper N. Cruden accompanied Misses 1., Morag and Millicent Macdonald and V. Anderson when- they danced the Highland reel and Highland fling, and members of tho Pipo Band played a selection. A guessing competition was won by Miss N. Sutherland and Mr V. Barnao. Prior to tho supper announcement Drum-Major J. Peteraua was presented with a drum-major's sash, which he will wear when he parades with the band. Mr J. S. Jenkinson, chief of the society, made tne presentation. Unexpectedly, Mr Jenkin.>.i congratulated Pipe-Major Nicholson and Mr C. Cronin on their birthdays, which fell on Saturday. They were both accorded musical honours. Mr Jenkinson reminded the assemblage of the “Gathering of the Clans,” which is to take place on July 1. It is expected that this notable gathering will this year exceed thoso of past years. Mr Jenkinson cordially welcomed Miss A. Moy, latterly of Sydney and now a resident of Palmerston North, and also greeted Misses I. and A. -Beaburn, of Melbourne, tvho aro visiting Palmerston North. Tho Misses Beaburn arc sisters of Mr B. Beaburn, of Palmerston North. Mr and Mrs Beaburn are long-standing and energetic members of the society. Mr Jenkinson concluded by saying that a rnalo choir was being formed from members of the society, the tutoring for which will be given by Mr J. B. Thompson. So pleased were the patrons at the gathering that it was heartily acclaimed a success, and credit is duo to the committee for its work. ‘ ‘Auld Lang Syne” and tho National Anthem terminated the proceedings at a late hour.
