“Sunday Prices”
HUMOROUS BUT SERIOUS Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, May 31. Sunday prices for butter and cheese may sound humorous, but apparently there is more than humour in the suggestion that such prices should be paid. The Cardiff branch submitted to the North Taranaki conference of the Farmers' Union on Friday a remit urging that the Government should provide for an extra payment for dairy produce on Sundays and statutory holidays. While he expected the remit would raise a laugh, it was brought forward in all seriousness, said Mr H. J. Marchant, who is a brother of a member of tho Dairy Board. There was something more than humour in it, as it might have a steadying influence on the Government in connection with the double wages plan for work on Sundays and holidays. It Would be unwise at present t« push the remit, as it would practically affirm the principle of double pay on such days, said the chairman, Mr Jl. E. Blyde. If the Government did impose such undue restrictions in connection with farm and dairy factory labour, the conference would be justified in putting such a remit forward.
The remit was withdrawn in * the meantime.
