Carnegie Fellowship

CHRISTCHURCH LIBRARIAN TO STUDY IN AMERICA Miss Dorothy M. Neal, of tho staff of the Canterbury Public Library, has been selected for the South island to take up one of the two travelling fellowships offered recently by tho Carnegie Corporation of New York to enable women librarians in New Zealand to study juvenile library methods rn the United States, states the Christchurch .Press. The amount of the grant to each librarian chosen in 2500 dollars. Miss Neal will leave by the Mariposa on June 27 with Miss K. Harvey, of the Wellington Public Library, who was chosen for the North Island. They will reach America about a month before beginning the course at tho library school in Pittsburgh on September 15, as the grant stipulates that this time shall be given to becoming familiar with library conditions in America. The course will last till June 10, 1937.

Though Miss Neal is one of the stall of the Canterbury Public Library, she has beeu chosen as the representative of the Dunedin Public Library, and when she returns will go to Dunedin to take up a position with the library, which is controlled by the City Council and the Otago Education Board jointly. The reason for this is that the conditions of tho fellowship required information as to the status of the librarian on her return, and the Canterbury College Council, because of its present financial position, was unable to guarantee a position of the status demanded. As the Dunedin library was unable to provide a suitable candidate, it decided to nominate Miss Neal under the conditions demanded, and this was allowed by tho selection committee. Miss Neal has been on tho staff f the Canterbury Public Library for three years. She is in her 21st year and w r as born in Christchurch. She was educated at the Phillipstown School and tho Avonsido Girls’ High School. She has been studying at tho Canterbury University College for the B.A. degree, of which she has gained one section. She has had several literary articles published and has spoken over the air.
