Sandon

The president, Mrs A. K. Drew, presided over the monthly meeting o£ the Sandon Women’s Institute. Before the business of the evening was taken, a vote of sympathy was accorded Mrs C. B. Tostevin in her sad bereavement. Mrs J. Bowater and Miss G. Adams were appointed delegates to attend the annual council meeting of the Northern Wellington Federation of Women’s Institutes. Mcsdames J. W. Masters and W. J. Rowan were appointed institute representatives to attend a meeting In connection with the Sarah Anne Rhodes Scholarship in home science. Mrs A. K. Drew congratulated the drama circle on the success they _ had attained at the recent drama competition, mentioning that the circle had given a very creditable performance. It was decided that tho llower show, which is to he held on April 22, be extended to the evening by having a social and dance. An invitation was received from the Parewanui Institute to attend their birthday function which is to be held on the Sth May. Misses M. McFarlane and J. Peattie arranged a very amusing game, which caused much interest. The cakeguessing .competition was won by Miss Peattie and the scone competition by Mrs F. Grace (Ist), with Mrs T. H. Williams second, in the senior section. The junior section was won by Miss Corrigan, with Miss Gwen Adams second. The winners of the competition for the best oven cloth were:—Senior: Mrs C. J. Eglinton 1, Mrs T. A. Adams 2, Mrs J. Nairn 3; juniors: Miss J. Peattie 1, Miss M. Macfarlano and Miss G. Adams equal 3. Table Tennis Club.

Mr Alan Nesbit presided over the annual meeting of tho Sandon Table Tennis Club, which was held on Wednesday. The meeting was well attended and judging by the enthusiasm displayed the coming season promises to be oven moro successful than the last. Mr E. J. Bowater, in speaking to the report and balance-sheet, congratulated the club on the splendid position the finances were in and rererred to the club as being a good social organisation for the young people during the winter months.

The election of officers resulted as follow:—Patron, Mr E. Wileoek; president, Mr A. Matthews; vice-presidents, Messrs E. Dwyer, T. R. Nicol, J. W. Masters, T. H. Williams, E. J. Bowater, K. M. Pearce, K. George and A. Nesbit; lion, secretary and treasurer, Mr E. N. Butler; club captain, Mr George Williams; vice-captain, Mr R. Meyer; executive committee, Messrs C. Oppatt, K„ Lumsden, F. Meyer, M. Cockburn and Misses Gwen Sanson and Jean Butler; chaperons, Mesdames E. N. Butler, E. J. Davey and Miss G. Sanson; selectors and handicappers, captain, vice-captain, and Mr Ken Lumsden; auditor, Mr S. L. Kent; custodians, left in tho bands of the captain and vicecaptain to appoint two eacn week; social committee, all lady members and Messrs O. Tong, K. Lumsden, M. Cocknurn, R. Bishop, R. Meyer, J. Harris, R. Lumsden, G. Osborne, F. Meyer, C. Oppatt, and A. G. Nesbit; hon. members for the year, Messrs E. Wileoek, K. N. Butler and Mrs E. J. Davey. Tho subscription was left the same as last year. It was decided that the weekly practice mgnt ne Saturday, and that all games start at 7.30 p.m. Tho official opening of the club will be April 24, and the arrangements were left in the hands of the executive. The neighbouring clubs arc to be invited to be present.

Affiliation with the Alanawatu Table Tennis Association was fully discussed and a motion to link up was defeated, members being of the opinion that transport was a big difficulty. The question of affiliating with the Te Kawau Association also received consideration ana It was finally decided to carry on as in the past and not affiliato with either association. The matter of purchasing new rets and balls was left in the hands of the' secretary with power to act, and he was also requested to wait on the Park board concerning the lighting arrangements. A. trophy for the most improved player during the coming season was donated by Air IC. George, while Messrs C. Oppatt, F. Aleyer, K. Lumsden and A. Alatthews offered to donate buttons for weekly competitions. A motion expressing the club’s appreciation to these gentlcmtn was passed. It was decided that the ladder competition start the night after the opening and the doubles competition the third practice night. The retiring president, Air A. G. Nesblt, was accorded a vote of thanks for his services during the past tv/o years and also to the club members who had provided transport. Personal. Air A. IC. Drew left on Thursday by air liner for Blenheim where he will play in the annual bowling tournament. Alessrs W. J. .Tenkins and A. F. Stevenson are competing at the Napier rifle championships. Aliss J. Peattie is spending her Easter vacation at her home m AVanganui. Air and Airs G. G. IC. Drew are staying at Itaumai. Alisses A. and E. Parker, who have been the guests of Air and Mrs W. H. Oppatt, have returned to their home in Auckland. Air Don Grace is visiting mends In Pmetihi and AVaverley. Aliss AI. AlacFariane will spend the holidays at her home in Levin. Air and Airs W. Aiken are staying with friends in Palmerston North. Air Jim Davey and Mr Gance Andrews, of AVellington, will be staying with Air and Airs E. J. Davey during the holidayperiod. General. The member for the district, Air C. L. Hunter, is endeavouring to arrange for the standard VI pupils of the district to travel to AVellington in order that they may have the opportuniy of witnessing Parliament in session. If this suggestion meets with the approval of parents, it is intended to take the first party after the Easter holidays. The past 10 days have been a busy period in the district as all the clubs are holding their annual meetings and making preparation for the coming season. Judging by the annual reports of the various institutions, Sanson can well bo proud of Its organisations as each are in a good financial position and all have a good membership. . Labour Committee. The quarterly meeting of the Alanawatu Labour Representative Committee was held at Sanson during last week-end. There was an excellent attendance and the president, R. Downes, Shannon, presided. Air AValley wa3 appointed timekeeper and Air AV, G. Bishop, minute secretary. The president referred to the death of .Mr F, AV, .Tostevia, and as a

mark of respect delegates stood in silence. It was also decided to forward a letter of sympathy to Mrs Tostevln. A letter of congratulation is to be sent to the Hon. Mark Briggs and the Hon. Rang! Moffatt on their appointment to the Legislative Council. , , .. „ A hearty welcome was accorded tne delegate from the Glen Oroua branch, which was recently formed, and Mr L. Poupard briefly replied. Conference remits wer© discussed at length &nd ihicu instructions were given, the L.R.C. delegates. Messrs W. G. Bishop, Levin, and E J. Bowater, Sanscn, were appointed to represent the Manawatu branch. Mr C. L. Hunter, M.P., member for the district, was present and gave an interesting account of Parliament at work. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Sanson branch for providing lunch and afternoon tea. The next meeting will ho held at Tanglmoana.
