Drivers' Union Holds Meeting

AV/AED DEMANDS ENDORSED

A meeting of the local Drivers’ Union was held at 41 Itangitikci street with an attendance of 50. Mr. W. Sutherland presided.

Apologies for 14 members for nonattendance were handed in. The bal-ance-sheet for the past year was read, discussed and adopted, members expressing appreciation of its satisfactory state, especially as the union has been experiencing a lean period for some time.

The demands for a new award were read and discussed, and endorsed. The wages asked are £4 ISs Od for a onehorse driver, £5 3s for lorry drivers, up to two tons of combined weight of vehicle and load, up to £5 12s for drivers of vehicles over 5i tons to 10 tons. A 40-hour week is provided for, special rates for overtime, 12 working, days’ annual holiday, together with New Year’s Day, January 2, Good Friday, Faster Monday, Anzac Day, the Sovereign’s Birthday, Labour Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and a drivers’ picnic day.

Compulsory unionism is also provided for. The Labour Department was criticised for alleged lack of inspection for breaches of the award in the past and it was decided that pressuro be brought to bear to see that the department take action against all offenders for breaches of award and a closer inspection be carried out in the future. Twenty new members joined up at the meeting.

Two of the prizes in a recent Tasmania consultation were secured by New Zealand residents, the 9th prize of £250 going to “L.L.,” Auckland, and the 10th prize of £245 to “Three Atta Boys,” also of Auckland.
