Pahiatua Sheep Dog Trial Club

ANNUAL TRIALS IN APRIL The most enthusiastic annual meeting, for several years, of the Pahiatua Sheep Dog Trial Club was held at the Commercial hotel on Tuesday, there being a very large attendance. The secretary reported that the loss of £l2 13s on the year’s working and the reasons for it, particularly pointiug out the lack of local support. It was unanimously decided to hold the annual trials on tho grounds kindly lent by Mrs F. W. Bibby at Mangahao, on April 22, 23 and 24, earlier than last year but probably more suitable in every way. Tho following officers and officials were elected: Patron, Mr F. W. Bibby; president, Mr J. A. Gibson; secretary, Mr S. K. Siddells; judge, Mr C. S. Hay; timekeeper, Mr C. Lassen; fieldmarshals, Messrs F. E. Ward and E. W. Eddie; ground stewards, Messrs A. W. Bisset, T. Harvey and T. Jones.

It was decided in an effort to induce more popular support to fix the subscription at 10s for active members and 5s for honorary members. •

Mr W. Bain offered a fat wether for a weight-guessing competition and donated the sheep as a prize for the winner. His action was greatly appreciated, and warmly applauded. Mr Bain also undertook to control this and other competitions instituted. Trophies and donations were also offered by C.W.S. fat stock buyers, W.F.C.A., Ltd., W. Coldicutt and F. F. Barraclough, and tho club acknowledges its grateful thanks for such encouraging generosity.

It was decided to cnlargo tho programme by including a straight hunt after the usual huntaway. A new departure has been made by fixing the long head for the first day, the short head for the second day, and the huntaways for tho final day. The short head may start the first day, but competitors coming each particular day will be certain of a run in the event they desire to compete in. It was decided to encourage local maiden competitors by providing prizes or trophies in each event. Favourable comment was passed on the encouraging signs of interest shown by new and local competitors. Tho secretary reported that for the first time during his term of office, he had been offered the use of wethers for the trials, and enthusiastic comment was made, the donor being warmly applauded and thanked.

It was decided finally to insist that, all dogs not actually competing at the time be tied up properly. The meeting closed with thanks to the chairman, Mr Coldicutt for the use of his room, and Mrs Bibby for the use of her grounds.
