Brilliant Scene at Polo Ball

Gay Social Function at Feilding

Splendidly organised by the Feilding and Rungitikei Polo Clubs tho ball held last evening in the Drill Hall, Feilding, marked in brilliant fashion tho opening of tho dancing season in this district and provided a dolightful social occasion for tho visiting polo players and their friends. Although it is six yoars since a polo tournament has been hold at Feilding, the ball was eagerly anticipated as a feature of tournament week with pleasant memories of previous happy gatherings. Visitors were present from all over tho North Island and a gay crowd thoroughly onjoyed dancing to the latest numbers contributed by Gedson’s Aces. Tho frocks of tho womenfolk were dazzingly beautiful, in a bewildering variety of colours, with rich silks, satins and velvets and many of tho glittering new materials making a delightful spectacle. It was noticeable that most of the frocks had trains, and there was the- contrast of the slimfitting styles and tho bouffant frocks so becoming to the very young.

Polo Association, and Mrs Levin, the latter wearing a distinctive frock of blackberry marocain with large chrysanthemum spray and pale pink ostrich feather capo; Mr and Mrs D. Riddiford (Wairarapa), Mrs Riddiford's trained frock being of parakeet satin beauto with which she wore a cape of tullo in tho same shade. Miss Eiddiford woro black and white polka dot organdie, Miss P. Eiddiford being in pink flat crepe. Three pretty maids had chosen this ball to make their bow to society. Thoy were:— Miss Margaret Luxmoore, of Feilding, who wore a rucked frock of poarltintod brocaded taffeta with gold sequin skouldor straps and butterfly bow with long cuds. She wore a bandeau matching her frock and carried a bouquet of sunset roses and maidenhair fern.

Miss Mary Matthews, of Palmerston North, woro pale pink satin with deep flouneo and epaulettes of embossed net, her bouquet being of pink rosebuds, begonias, carnations and maiden-hair fern.

r Canopied in blue and white the colours of the New Zealand Polo Association, the hall presented a charming appearance. Conspicuous on the walls, which wore panelled in white and gold, were tho shields of the various polo clubs surmounted with crossed polo sticks. Over festoons of lycopodium alternated red, green and amber lights right round the hall and from the peak of the canopy were suspended coloured lanterns in blue and gold and clusters of fairy lamps intertwined with lycopodiums. Tho stage was comfortably furnished as a drawing-room with easy chairs on cosy carpets and lovely brass bowls in which had been artistically arranged dahlias and zinnias in rich autumn tones enhanced with the foliage of gclder Toses arid a background of bamboo. Wide steps fully carpeted gave easy access to the drawing-room. The dais for tho musicians erected in one corner of the hall, was banked with hydrangeas in varying pastel shades. Leading off from the hall were two large marquees, one of which wag arranged as a lounge and gaily decorated with largo bowls of African marigolds and autumn foliage, hydrangeas and delphinurns with clumps of bamboo, palms and fern. In the socond marquee claret cup was served in a setting of hydrangeas, Michaelmas daisies and greenery. Jn the supper Toom the long tables were centred with crystal and brass bowls of rich toned dahlias, zinnias, pompom dahlias and autumn foliage, with here and there flat bowls of the same gay blooms, and here the guests wore , regaled with every conceivable savoury, also delicacies of the sweet

Miss Patricia Fitzgerald, of Feilding, was in ivory taffeta cloque, with Grecian sleeves and high neckline niched and finished with silver lame buttons. The train was rucked to the skirt and she carried an ostrich feather fan.

Mrs C. Luxmoore, accompanied her daughter wearing black lace. Mrs B. Cousins (Colyton), who brought Miss Matthews, w r ore navy lace, and Mrs Fitzgerald, who presented her daughter, was in black georgette and lace.

Members of the ball committee who had worked enthusiastically to ensure the enjoyment of their guests were:— Mr 3 Bex AlcKelvio (Parewanui), in figured marocain; Mrs N. J. Short (Waituna), in black panne velvet and silver lame; Mrs K. Little, black and gold checked taffeta lame; Mrs J. Graham, mist-bluo crepo de soir, whito fur coat; Miss Joan Cousins (Waiata), magnolia lace with marina green sash: Miss P. Levin (Feilding), honey beige lace with lamo thread; Miss Cynthia Wilson (Bulls), ivory net with goid thread, gold lame and blue and blue sash; Mrs Z. Stalker, the very efficient secretary, who woro silver groy satin with brocaded lamo coat; also Messrs E. McKelvio, N. J. Short, Quentin Wilson and E. Cousins (Waiata). The decorations, which were so much admired, had been carried out by Mesdames A. Anderson and C. V. Broad, Mr and Mrs G. Mcßeth, together with committee members.
