Waituna West
From Our Own Correspondent. Miss Jean Johnson is spending a holiday in Ohakune and is the guest of Mrs. C. Snow. Mrs. F. H. Eggers is spending a holiday with friends in the Taumarunui district Cheltenham Carnival. Last Friday an enjoyable dance was held in the Cheltenham Hall in aid of the sports queen candidate. A very bright and lively time was spent m dancing. The hall looked very attractive tvith streamers of red and white, the queen’s colours. Very pretty bowls of dahlias stood on a table in the front, tne decorations being the work of Mrs. H. Branch, of Cheltenham. Competitions and novelty dances continued throughout the evening, Mr Murray carrying off the prizes ror the statue waltz. The competition, tin of cigarettes, was won by Mr. Grieves. On behalf of the sports queen, Mr. W. Booth thanked everybody for attending and making the evening such a success, after which little Donald Brancn presented the queen with a bouquet of maiden-hair fern and asters. Mr. Dave Garrick carried out the duties of M.C. and extras were played by Miss Joyce Batchelar. Supper was served by the committee of ladies. Dancing continued till about 1 a.m. when the happy crowd left for home, feeling thoroughly satisfied with their evening’t entertainment. Quite a number of votes was added to the queen’s funds, the function being a great success. Concert and Dance. A very bright and happy function was held in the Waituna West hall on Monday evening last. The residents of the district had the pleasure of being entertained by a party of artists, who so kindly came out from Palmerston North and contributed a concert programme to assist the Cheltenham sports queen candidate, Miss Joyce Batchelar, of Waituna West. A splendid variety programme was rendered, and the audience showed its appreciation by their hearty applause, it is a long time since an audience at Waituna West has had the opportunity of listening to a programme of this, nature. Tho opening item was a humorous charlcter sketch by the comedian of the party. Mr. W. G. Tabor, entitled “Our Village Concert," and following that “The Story if a Kiss.” Other items were given by Mr. C. Cronin with vocal solos, Mr. W. Affien with tap dancing and Mr. Flowers, ventriloquist. Mrs. McNellly was the lccompanist. Mr. J. W. Batchelar, on behalf of the sports queen, thanked the performers for their enjoyable entertainment and for their sporting way in coming out so far to assist the queen candidate’s funds. The rudience showed its appreciation in the rsual manner. Supper was served, after vhich the hall was cleared for dancing. Che music .was played, by jtfrs. McNellly
(Palmerston North), Mrs. W. Watt (Rewa), Miss Joyce Batchelar and others. Mr. R. D. Batchelar carried out the duties of M.C. An interesting competition ran throughout the evening, this being a beautiful linen table cloth donated to the funds by Mrs. S. Coleman, of Waituna West. It was drawn and won by Mr. Colin Davenport, of Cheltenham. Dancing continued throughout the evening, the door takings being very satisfactory.
