POLO AT FEILDING

Junior Cup Semi-finals WHAREAMA DEFEAT MATANGI The Savile Cup polo tourney of . the New Zealand Polo Association was continued in fine but cold weather at Feilding yesterday. In tho junior cup semi-finals Whareama (Wairarapa) defeated tho cup holders, Matangi B, by 6 goals to 5 in an exciting game, and Rangitikei A defeated Rangitikei B. The first handicap cup match was played in the morning when Feilding A defeated Hawke’s Bay C. HANDICAP CUP MATCH. Feilding A (10) v. Hawke’s Bay C (17). Feilding A: G. Mcßeth 1, R. Scott 2, J. Mackenzie 3, J. Old 4; Hawke’s Bay C: G. F. McHardy 1, R. B. Nelson 2, D. H. Newbigin 3, S. Wright 4, Foilding went to the attack from the throw-in and the initial assault on the Bay goal saw one of the Bay players send the ball between tho uprights in an effort to counter Feilding’s shot. —l —o. Mcßeth carried tho willow away to the other goal in a good run and left tho opening for Scott to goaL —2 —o. A pretty movement by Mackenzie terminated in this player’s shot getting home in good style.—3—o. The interval came with Feilding four goals behind.

Early in the second chultka from the hit out on the side line Mackenzie sen', home another good goal and the next attack witnessed a succession of hits behind to be followed by an infringement by the defenders. The penalty shot was skilfully countered and the Bay team got away for Kelson to goal without opposition. — £ —1. The third chukka found ihe Bay team a littlo more aggressive and a fairly even contest ensued. Mcßeth. shot an easy goal after the defenders had made a fine save during a close call and shortly afterwards Kelson registered for the Bay to make the total score 10 —15. The Bay team held tho advantage throughout tho next chukka although no score resulted. Feiiding opened the next chukka with a rallying effort but failed to improve their position on account of mis-hitting. After four shots had failed the attackers were penalised for a cross, Kelson taking the GO yards’ hit which was countered. A few seconds later the Bay team suffered a penalty hit for a cross but Mackenzie’s attempt went behind. A keen struggle followed tho hit out and this ended in Scott goaling. —19 —10. In the sixth chukka Feiiding put on two goals through the agency of Mackenzie and Scott after a period of indifferent play and badly directed shots. —l9 —lß. The pace was put on with vigour in tho last period and within a minute of time Jdcott played the willow up for Mackenzie to goal. This equalised tho score and the Bay immediately attacked and tho pressure was such as to cause Feiiding to hit behind their own goal. Following the usual five minutes' interval extracted in the case of a tie the gamo proceeded, tho Bay team taking a GO yards’ penalty hit ai tho spot opposite where the ball was hit behind. Tho shot was countered by Mcßeth who subsequently carried the play away to the Bay goal in a promising run. His shot, however, went Dehind and a keen struggle ensued around tho Bay goal. The first period of extra time eiosed with the score unaltered, Feiiding registering six hits behind and failing to direct tho willow between tho posts. “Sitters” went begging, the faulty direction of the attackers favouring the Bay whose defence was ably assisted by Kelson and Wright. Half way througt the ninth chukka Mcßeth ended the game in favour of Feiiding by shooting the deciding goal. Messrs Riddiford and G. Ranstead were the umpires. SEMI-FINALS JUNIOR CUP. Whareama v. Matangi B. Whareama: R. Hewitt I, W. Levin 2, R. Bunny 3, B. Yallance 4. Matangi B: T. Fergusson I, U. Ilowlett 2, W. Phillips 3, L. Chitty 4. Spirited play was witnessed in the opening chukka with little between the teams. Evenly divided in attack the contest passed up and down the field until within tho last miuuto when Levin, with a determined effort, captured possession and lined the willow for tho goal to enable Bunny to come through and goal. I—o.1 —0. Matangi (old gold) gathered tho willow at tho throw-in and moved smartly to Whareama’s goal where Chitty was left a “sitter.” A wild scramble to avert the inevitable goal caused confusion among the goal umpires, but the shot wpnt home. I—l.1 —1. Immediately afterwards Vallance made the score 2—l in favour of Whareama and just after tho bell sounded Bunny goaled very definitely. 3 —l. Early in the third chukka Whareama made the Waikato team appear shorn of all energy, Vallance taking charge, with admirable backing on each occasion, to score two pretty goals. s—l.5 —1. Waikato’s forwards were not getting the play their earlier form gave promise of. A 60 yards penalty hit for hitting behind their goal line was taken against Whareama at the opening of the fourth chukka, but Chitty failed to make use of the two chances of goaling which were afforded him. Robbed of this chance the wearers of tho old gold launched a vigorous attack which faded out to leave an easy opening for Phil lips to goal. 5 —2. Defending the other end of the field Whareama were again penalised for hitting behind their own goal line and were lucky to counter the shot. Tho Waikato boy 3 maintained the pressure throughout the

chukka which terminated with the score unaltered. Tho fifth chukka, beyond a little spasmodic galloping and an occasional flash of individual play, was in danger of becoming monotonous, but almost on the call of time Levin lifted the play from the ruck and carried the willow almost to goaling point for Hewitt to make a “bird” of tho shot. 6—2. Half-way through the sixth chukka Whareama were penalised for a dangerous cross. Phillips took the 40 yards penalty shot to goal comfortably. 6—3. The Wairarapa team continued to hold tho balance of power, but in this chukka lacked the finishing off: of their good hitting. Half the time in the final chukka had elapsed before anything spirited happened. Vallancc went to the attack and carried tho willow the length of the field to lose possession to Phillips, who galloped off. His progress was free, Bunny proving no obstacle to the veteran Waikato chief who controlled the willow down the field and then shot it home. 6—4. Attacking the other goal Matangi made the challenge vigorous and by their tactics outwitted the defence to enable Phillips to goal once more. 6 —5. This challenge stirred the crowd and Matangi tried another tactic which, however, was smothered and Whareama were in charge ns tho final bell sounded with the verdict to Whareama by 6 to 5. Messrs. Wilson and Meredith were the umpires. Rangitikei A v. Rangitikei B. Rangitikei A: I. Parsons 1, .T. Duncan 2, R. McKelvie 3, .T. G. Wilson 4. Rangitikei B: K. MeK. Duncan 2. R. Simpson 2, W. W. Wilson 3, R. A. W ilson 4. The opening chukka was nono too inspiring and the A team held the advantage throughout. The first goai camo through the effort of Parsons, who placed the willow nicely for McKelvio to goal. Tho B team challenged for a minute or so, but had to give way to an attack which terminated in Parsons goaling. 2—o. Tho second chukka of this more or less friendly contest produced two goals for the A team through the agency of McKelvie, who handled the willow nicely. Hanging on with a worrying persistency the B team frustrated the efforts of their opponents to combine and the struggle throughout the third chukka was interrupted by one goal secured by J. G. Wilson. s—l.5 —1. Tho senior team went all out in tho fourth chukka and added four goals, three through tho agency of Duncan, and one by J. G. Wilson, who made the score 9—o. In the following chukka play proceeded steadily with no outstanding play. Duncan and McKelvie supplied a goal apiece aud just as the chukka ended K. McK. Duncan scored for the junior combination, making tho score 11—1. The senior team continued to hold tho reins, but were not extended and the ball was kept close 1o the ground in a somewhat sticky exhibition. Towards the end Parsons goalcd to make tho score 12 —1. In the final chukka the A team eoneduded the match by bringing tho score to 14 —1 by two goals added by McKelvie. The umpires were Messrs. Meredith and Wilson. TO-DAY’S GAMES.
