Delightful Continental Star On Silver Sheet
LILIAN HARVEY APPEARS IN “INVITATION TO THE WALTZ"
(Regent: Screening Wednesday Next.) There is no more charming creature on the talking screen to-day than the lovely Continental artist, Lilian Harvey. Lilian, as everybody knows, first made her mark in the brilliant ‘ 1 Congress Dances, ’ ’ since when she has been featured in several big Hollywood successes. In the opinion of the majority d the big film critics, “Invitation to the Waltz” affords the star her greatest opportunity sines that first memorable success.
Because of the fact that she first blossomed forth in Continental productions, most film fans believe that shs was born there. This is quite wrong, for sho was actually born and bred in London. Now, of course, she can command attention anywhere in the world, tho studios of the Continent, Hollywood and Elstree all bidding for her valuable services.
W’herever she goes she never fails to create a stir with her luxurious Mercedes car, a truly breath-taking modern carriage. Now that she is living, in Elstrec.it is to bo seen scouring the countryside every morning, but Lilian is an early riser and it mostly has the roads to itself.
Lilian is essentially a woman of the home, and sho thoroughly enjoyed her sojourn at Elstree. Right near the studios she has a small house, with nothing startling about it at first sight, but it provides a delightful setting for her dainty personality. She has a lovely garden —nothing pretentious, but a simple, sunny place, beautifully set by tho star herself. All her spare moments are spent here, and it is a common sight to sec her pulling out the weeds. You might, be tempted to remark that such an occupation is most undignified for a personage of such importance, but the star maintains that it is good for the figure. She relished making “Invitation to the Waltz," for tho role was one after her own heart. It gave her plenty of dancing to do, and there’s nothing she enjoys more than that, particularly when she has a partner like Anton Dolin.
Directed by Dr. Paul Merzbach, witn whom Lilian was associated on the Continent, the splendid cast included Carl Esmond, Esme Percy, Harold Warrender, Richard Bird, Gus McNaugkton, and Hay Petrie.
