On Saturday last the Woodville'B grade team met the Manawatu team on the local courts, a very even match resulting:, iu a win for Manawatu by the small margin' of threo games, set being- equal. Results were as follows, Woodville players being mentioned first:— Men’s singles: Ewing beat McKenzie 9—7, Robertson lost to Elliot 7—9, Bartle beat Beattie 9—5, Johnston beat McGrath 9—7. Ladies’ singles: Mrs Wright beat Miss Weeks B—6, Miss Gothanl lost to' Mrs Holmes 2—7, Miss Goodwin beat Miss Norris 7—5,. Mrs. Hannay lost to Miss Christie 4—7.' Men’s doubles: Ewing- - and ' Robertson beat McKenzie and Elliot 16—14, Bartle and Johnston beat Beattie and McGrath 9—7. Ladies’ doubles: Mrs Wright and irh-s-Gotlidrd • beat - Miss Weeks and Mrs Holmes 7 — A, , Miss .. Goodwin .' and Mrs Hannay. lost to Misses - Norris and Christie 11—13. -••.ft.-v-Mixed doubles: Ewing and Mrs Wright lost to .McKenzie and Miss Weeks 5—9, Robertson and Miss Gothard lost to Elliot and Mrs Holmes 6—9, Bartle and Miss Goodwin lost to Beattie and Miss Norris 7—9, Johnston and Mrs Hannay lost to McGrath and. Miss Christie 6—9. Carnival Jottings. The present position of the queen candidates shows the A. and P. queen in the lead with 5313 votes being followed by the Town queen with 4565 votes and the Institute queen with 3459 votes. On Friday last the Tahoraite Maori party put on a concert in aid of the A. and P. queen and a large audience gave the thirty odd performers a well deserved hearing, the items on the programme being particularly well rendered. The same night, at Papatawa, dance enthusiasts -were catered for at the Victoria hall, where a superstitious dance (Friday 13th) was held in aid of the Town queen. A street stall hold on Saturday in aid of the A. and P. queen did a roaring business and a very handy amount was collected by those in charge. Bowls. During the week-end a team of bowlers representing the Palmerston North Returned Soldiers visited Woodville and tried conclusions with six rinks of Woodville diggers. Two games of thirteen heads each were played and at the finish of play the Palmerston .. players were slightly in the lead. Afternoon tea was dispersed by the local players and the afternoon was voted by ail as a most successful one. A return match is scheduled to take place in a fortnight's time.
