From Our Own Correspondent. On Sunday last the harvest festival servlco was held in the Apiti, Methodist Church which Was decorated in a manner suitable to the occasion.- - On Thursday the sale of produce took place at a garden party at the Parsonage. Fortunately the day was line and the function was well attended. The Women’s Institute aster competitions were in charge o. Mesdames John Jensen and H. Schmidt and attracted a large number of entries which provided a most colourful display of blooms. Much favourable commen. was heard on the beauty and condition o. the flowers, and this is a matter for congratulations to the growers when one considers tho unseasonable weather 1 cently experienced in the district. The appointed judge was at the eleventh hour unable to be present and Mrs S. J. Martin who most obligingly consented to judge the competitions had a difficult task awarding the prizes in the five classes for which there were altogether 39 entries. During the afternoon there were several outdoor games and a treasure hunt, with gifts for all. The cake and sweets stall was In charge of Mesdames W. R. Pratt and G. H. Gubbins, while Mesdames J. Mapson and J. Jensen were at the produce stall. Mesdames R. Patchett, Digby, L. Gould, L. Guy, Purnell and London had a busy time serving afternoon tea. The games and edmpetitions were in charge of Rev. R. Patchett and Mrs Purnell (guild president) and Mesdames E. Clifton, K. Cooper, T. Brazier and Misses L. Osborne, E, Digby and Maisie Purnell. After afternoon tea, Mrs W. M. Duncan, speaking on behalf of the Women’s Institute, announced the winners of tho flower competitions and before calling on Rev. Patchett to present the prizes apologised for the absence of the W.I. president, Mrs C. M. Stanley. Tho speaker thanked Mrs s' J.' Martin for judging the flowers and then voiced the' regret of W.I. members at. tho impending departure from Apiti of Mrs Patchett. Mrs Duncan wished Mrs Patchett and her husband every happiness in their new home and called on littlo Jennifer Gubbins to present a posy of bronze French marigolds and ferns with the best wishes of all W.I. members. Thanks were also expressed to Rev. and Mrs Patchett and the Methodist Guild for the courtesy extended the W.I. in placing a room at their disposal for the floral exhibits. Rev. and Mrs Patchett returned thanks for the good wishes of the W.I. members. Prizes were then presented to the winners in the following classes: Aster, champion bloom, Miss R. Purnell 1, Mrs W. J. Viles 2, Mrs L. Paterson 3; three asters, Miss R. Purnell .1, Mrs R. Patchett 2, Mrs W. J. Viles 3; collection of six, Mrs M. E. A. Martin 1, Mrs L. Paterson 2, Mrs R. Churoher 3; decorative bowl, Miss Strahan 1 and 3, Mrs I. Munro 2; collection of flowers, not more than 12, Mrs J. F. Jensen 1, Mrs F. Munro 2, Mrs C. Mclntyre 3. The points prize ior most points other than lirst prize winners was won by Mrs F. Munro. The Methodist guild president, Mrs T. H Purnell, then called on Miss Linda Osborne, a guild member .who is shortly to he married, to accept from her church friends a gift for use in her future home and with it the best wishes of all for a happy married life. MisE L. Osborne briefly returned thanks. Mrs M. E. A. Martin won a fruit cake by correctly .estimating its weight, libs. 13ozs, Mr Patchett expressed thanks to all who had assisted in making tho garden party such a successful one and called on the competition winners to receive their prizes as follows: Distance stepping, Mrs L. you a; bean throwing, Mrs W. T. Pratt; ladder croquet, Mrs H. L. Osborne; ninepins, Mi C. Cockburn. The Apiti School committee met on Monday evening. There were present Messrs Wildbore (chairman), A. W. Benseman, R. V. Stewart, B. Watson, W. Hogan (secretary), and G. H. Gubbins (head teacher). The playgrounds, basketball and football grounds are now m splendid order having been, cleared ot stones, disced, sown, and rolled. The committee hopes to see .a large attendance of parents and. friends at the school picnic on Friday, March 20.
