Football in Feilding
OLD BOYS CLUB MEETING.
Tho annual meeting of tho Feilding Old Boys Rugby Football Club was held last evening, Mr D. Whisker presiding over a large attendance.
Tho report and balance sheet were adopted, following a brief review of the affairs of the club by the president. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr L. J. Wild; president, Mr D. Whisker; vice-presidents, Messrs E. Houlihan (Palmerston North) and R. Bevan with twenty-seven others from last year’s list; club captain, Mr C. Pearse; secretary, Mr J. Finlay; treasurer, Mr P. C. Eade; committee. Messrs J. P. Thurston, R. Kyle, H. Waugh, N. Penney, 11. Crump; delegates to the annual meeting of the Rugby Union, Messrs C. Pearse, D. Whisker, J. Finlay and N. Penney. Messrs Pearse and Jenkins were elected trainers of the club.
Discussing tho nomination of teams, Mr Finlay suggested that the committeo should endeavour to arrange to enter three teams.
An amendment was proposed that the club should withhold its nominations until tho differences between the Manawatu Rugby. Union and tho Feilding Football Executive wero settled.
Discussing this question, the chairman expressed tho view that it should be amicably settled. He held no brief for the Manawatu Union, although ho did not consider anything should be done to create further difficulties and a wider breach.
Mr L. Penney considered that tho club should back up the Feildiug Club’s attitude of withholding nominations until the trouble between the union and the Feilding Football Executive was settled.
The chairman said that as the trouble had been going on for some years and had not yet been settled, it was possible that the difficulty would never be settled. What then would be the position regarding the club’s nomination? Mr Penney, in reply, said that the club would continue to back up the stand of the Feilding Club. Following some discussion the amendment was declared carried on the voices.
Mr J. Hart, representing tho Massey College Club, waited on tho meeting to suggest tho co-operation of tho Old Boys Club in an effort to bring to an amicable settlement the matter of alleged rough play on the part of the Woodvillo Club.' The speaker said that tho desire of Massey College was to assist tho union, which was anxious to retain Woodvillo in the competition and the collegiate club was prepared to go as far as meeting tho Woodville Club representatives to endeavour to arrive at a happier understanding. Failing this, Massey College would refuse to travel to Woodville.
Support for tho stand of Massey College was accorded by Mr C. Pearse, who moved that the Old Boys Club agree to co operate with Massey College in tho direction indicated. This was seconded by Mr Finlay and carried. Suggestions were made for arranging the usual practice matches and it was left to the secretary to endeavour to fix the engagements. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr Houlihan, of Palmerston North, for the donation of a cup, to be competed for annually, for the player showing the best team spirit.
Alluding to the remarks of Mr S. S. Dean as to the international scrum formation of 32 —3, Mr C. Pearso suggested in view of the likelihood of a discussion on tho subject at the forthcoming union meeting, the club should express an opinion, He personally favoured tho 32 —2 formation.
It was agreed to leave the question to the union to decide.
Tho thanks of the club were voted to Mr W. 11. McLean for his donation of a replica in silver of a football for presentation to Ray Gloyn in appreciation of his work as rearguard for the senior fifteen—or “a good full back,” as tho inscription set out.
Discussing the union’s fixtures for the forthcoming competitions, the chairman suggested that the draw for each round should be published and kept to. He recalled tho incident last season which involved St. Pat’s Club, and hoped that this would be avoided.
Mr C. Pearso said that the first two rounds last season were played out according to schedule but the third round experienced trouble owing to wet weather and the advent of representative games. He went on to say that St. Pat’s wero disappointed in not meeting Massey College. Tho chairman considered that the delegates to the annual meeting of the union should endeavour to insist that the draw for tho different rounds is published and held to throughout the season. The following new members wore elected:—J. F. Crisp, S. A. Crump, M. Dermer, T. Dormer, Hills, mi., Edhouse, D. Sawers, R. Carter, C. Cheetham, Jensen, S. Kennedy, D. Walker, E. Harris and G. Lawson. Votes of thanks to Mr and Mrs C. Jenkins, Mr A. Pearse, Mr V. Morphy and St. John’s Ambulance organisation, donors of trophies, supporters and the Press. In proposing a voto of thanks and appreciation to the Feilding Football Club, the chairman paid a tribute to the demonstrations of goodfellowship and co-operation evidenced by the "yellows” throughout tho season. It "was agreed at the instance of Mr M. Amadio, to recommend to tho comrnitteo that the ‘‘wind up” function of tho club at tho end of the season take the form of a social galion'iig at which tho ladies could be present.
