Obituary
MR F. C. RAIKES The death occurred on Saturday morning at his home at Oroua Downs of Mr Francis Campbell Raikes, J.P. For many years Mr Raikes was headmaster in charge of the Oroua Downs School, but relinquished that position to take up fanning at Oroua Downs. By scientific methods lie made a success of this venture and latterly had concentrated his attention on poultry farming on a large scale. He was keenly interested in local-body affairs and was a member of the executive and ex-president of the New Zealand Poultry Farmers’ Association. He was greatly interested in the possibilities of the port of Foxton and the seaside resort, and w r as Government representative on the Foxton Harbour Board for a number of years. For the past two years deceased had occupied the position of president of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce, still holding that office at the time of his death. He was also one of the original members of the Manawatu Rabbit Board, but did not seek re-election at the last poll. As chairman of the Oroua Downs Dairy Company, and a member of the sports club and other local bodies, he took a keen interest in the welfare of Oroua Downs and will be greatly missed. - Mr Raikes had been confined to his bed for only a week, suffering from pleurisy and pneumonia. He is survived by Mrs Raikes. There is no family. MR J. W. ROBINSON There passed away at his residence, "Te Moana,” Lady’s hjlile, Foxton, on Thursday night, one of the oldest residents of Foxton and district in the person of John Walker Robinson, in his 71st year. He was the fifth son of the late Captain Francis Robinson, one of New Zeaalnd’s early colonists, who arrived by the ship Landarin at Port Nicholson in 1811, and soon afterwards acquired extensive land holdings in the Manawalu. lie became chairman of the Foxton Road Board, then the only local body in the district. The lato Mr Robinson was born at Foxton in ISGS and was educated at the local school. On leaving school he worked on his late father’s Herrington estate. In ISOS Mr Robinson married Miss E. G. Harley, of Nelson, and took up his permanent residence in Foxton. His genial disposition and helpful assistance so freely rendered to all sporting and charitable organisations endeared him to many, lie was a member of the Foxton Racing Club.
Mr Robinson leaves to mourn hi? passing a widowg three sons (Messrs Kenneth, Noel and Allen Robinson), and one daughter (Miss Nancy Robinson), all of Foxton.
