Lit Cigar With Bank Note

Tho magnificent gesture of lighting his halfpenny cigar with a banknote has cost a farmer of Veseli (Moravia) just twice as much as he intended. Ctibor Novotny was discussing the day’s sales-and purchases- with some other - farmers at tho local inn. He boasted that he had had record prices for his live stock—‘ ‘enough to retire on.” In proof of his wealth he proceeded to pull out a banknote worth nearly £1 and it his cigar with it. The company was duly impressed. -Unfortunately this act fired the jealousy of one of those present who slipped out and informed a policeman. Novotny was promptly arrested for wilful damage to the currency. On top of the present his gesture had made to tho Government. Novotny had to pay the same sum as a line.
