HAWKE CUP MATCH WITH RANGITIKEI JUNIOR A COMPETITION DIVIDED Mr A. M, Ongley (chairman) pre : sided at last evening’s meeting of the Manawatu Cricket Association's executive committee. Others present were Messrs W. H. Wilson, G. Griggs, F. Hubbard, E. J, Worry, E. Weir, N, Gallichan and K. A. Brace (secretary). Apologies for absence wero received from Messrs J. R. Hardie and G.. Dawick. • The Nelson and Southland Cricket Associations wrote tendering their hearty thdnks for hospitality extended their teams on the occasion of visits Lu connection with Hawke Cup challenges, and congratulating Manawatu on their success against the South Island teams. Tho Now Zealand Cricket Council wrote for particulars of teams playing within tho, Manawatu association's boundaries.—Tho secretary was instructed to forward ,the necessary information.
A letter from Horowhenua gave statistics for that part of the area. In regard to the request for practice wickets for next season, the City Council wrote that the city curator was to confer with the groundsman and submit an estimate of the cost. A later communication indicated that for the 1935-36 season the wickets required by the association would be provided for £IOO.
The Manawatu Cricket Umpires’Association forwarded a suggestion that the association should take action to impress upon captains of teams and the players that the incoming batsman should bo nt the wickets within two minutes of the fall of the last wicket.
The meeting agreed that there was need of action by the association, and it was decided that a local by-law should be framed and discussed by the next annual meeting.
In regard to Mr R. S. Abraham’s donation of a bat for the best field in the Manawatu team against M.C.C., the chairman reported that he had discussed the matter with Mr Abraham and it had been decided in view of the fact that the M.C.C. match hah been confined to one day’s play, that the bat should be awarded the best field in Hawke Cup games. The meeting agreed to this propoasl. Hawke Cup Matches - In answer to a question the chairman stated that there were three Hawke Cup challenges in and RangiLikei were next on tho list, with Taranaki and South Auckland following in that order. It was resolved, on the motion of Messrs Hubbard and Griggs, that Rangitikei be offered March 13, 11 and 16. It was also decided that in the event of Rangitikei not accepting the dates, Manawatu should challenge Feilding for the Goldfinch and Cousins Cup, the match to be played at Feilding on Saturday, March 14. Mr Weir suggested it might be a good plan to arrange for some representative games for the junior players, but the chairman said the season had been such a wet one that the only time such games could be considered was at Easter.
It was decided that the secretary get into touch with Wellington suggesting that they play Manawatu at .Wellington during Easter. Junior A Competition
Mr Weir submitted a table showing tho position of the teams at the end of tho first round. He stated there was no chance of completing a second round and asked what the association was going to do about it. The position of tho teams is as follows:—Kia Toa 24 points, Y.M.C.A. 22, High School 20, Old Boys 12, Combined Services 12, Palmerston 8, City Council 8, Massey College 4. It was finally decided that the competition be divided into first and second divisions, with four teams in eacU, and that the teams be drawn for three two-day games to be played on fixed dates.
Ia regard to the teams sharing the fourth rung of the ladder, it was decided they should bo drawn, Old Boys going into the first division and Combined Services into the second division. Draw for Saturday First Division.—Old Boys (m.) v. Kia Toa, No. i Sportsground; High School (m.) v. Y.M.C.A., No. 1 Ter race End. Second Division.—City Council (m.) v. Combined Services, No. 3 ' Sports ground; Palmerston (m.) v. Massey College, No. 2 Terrace End. The draw for the balance of the junior A fixtures was left in the hands of Messrs Weir and Werry. Junior B Grade The chairman reported that the junior B grado had time to complete a fourth round and he moved that this be 'done, the draw to be the same as for the first round. —Agreed to. Fixtures for Saturday The Junior B fixtures for Saturday (last games in third round) are as follow: —Combined Services (m.) v. H. L. Young’s, North Street Park; Y.M.C.A. (m.) v. Kiwi, No. 5 Sportsground; Old Boys (m.) v. United, No. 6 Sportsground. Letters of Thanks Letters of thanks are to bo forwarded Messrs Child Bros., the Wellington Express Co., and Messrs Pegdens, for the use of lorries in connection with cartage for the M.C.C. match. Mr J. E. Beilis was elected an honorary member of tho cricket association and he is to receive a letter of thanks for services to members of the English team.
