Leakage of Secret Document

INVESTIGATION BEING MADE BY MR A. EDEN. LONDON, Feb. 24. Mr Anthony Eden has informed the House of Commons that he is investigating the leakage of the Mafl'ey report which in no way established the variability and insincerity of the British policy. It was merely a report of the inter-departmental committee as a result of Italy’s inquiry as to the extent of British interests in Abyssinia. Mr Eden explained that the leakage of the Mafl’ey- report occurred iu Paris. Mr. Eden said that Italy made inquiry towards the end of January, 1935. No specific reply was returned to Italy owing to the fact that Italian activities in Abyssinia by then wore raising tho whole question of the integrity of Aby-s----sinia. Any personal British interests were then naturally subordinate to our obligations as a member of the League. He agreed that the leakage was a matter of grave concern and hoped the House would not ask what steps he proposed to take. Mr. Eden added that a distinction must be drawn between a document stolen in London and leakage over a document iu Paris over which they had no control. He expressed the opinion that no useful purpose would be served by- publishing the document as a AVhjtc Paper. . - •
