Fear of Heavy Earthquake

ANXIETY IN INDIA’S HILL PROVINCES. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Wednesday, 1.10 a.m. CALCUTTA, Feb. 24. Severe earth tremors of tho last three weeks, coupled with .the priests’ and astrologers ’ forecasts of a wide scale earthquake within the next fortnight, caused a panic in towns and villages of north-eastern Bengal, Bihar and Assam. The inhabitants, flrmly believing the big shock will come in the night, are sleeping in tho open air despite the intense cold of the hilly districts, while in Bihar, the scene of the great ’quake in 1934, householders and traders have moved goods into the open. Prayers are being offered in the mosques and temples to avert the catastrophe. Water spouts and other land phenomena are believed by the superstitious to portend a disaster of unparalleled severity.
