Arrangements are well in hand for the big combined ball to be held in the Mangamutu hall next Wednesday evening. Great interest is being displayed in the waltzing and foxtrot competitions. Visiting swimmers will also be present after the carnival. I’reo cars will leave the taxi stand at 8 p.m., and also after the swimming carnival. The Eketahuna Amateur Athletic Club are- holding a monster sports meeting at the Alfredton Koad Domain, Eketahuna, next Saturday, and the manner in which entries are rolling in gives a good indication of the success of the meeting. Cycling, running, horses, piping and dancing events, together with children’s races, baby shows, side shows and a merry-go-round, will all be on the programme. The applications were received by the town clerk for the position of a junior assistant and blaster Allan Jones was the successful applicant. Mr- Sefton Walsh has resigned his position on the clerical staff of the stores division of ■ the Eost and Telegraph Department in consequence of his being accepted as a student in the Wellington Teachers’ Training College. The committee of the Pahiatua Horticultural and Industrial Society has decided to abandon its show for

this year owing to. the shortage of " flowers in the district. It was decided " to hold' the next show barly in March, 1937, and that it be made a two-day's gathering. So successful was the sealed handicap Yankee doubles tournament' held by the Pahiatua Lawn Tennis Club two weeks back that it has been decided -• to hold another sealed handicap tournament next Sunday. The games will be run off in two sections, the first starting in the morning at 10 a.m., and ~ the second (when there will be a redraw for partners) will be started after lunch (at 1.30 p.m.). The committee has decided to award the following prizes:—Lady and gentleman with most number of games actually won; (2) lady and gentleman winning the greatest numly.r of games with handicap; (3) pair with the least num ber of games on handicap.
