Big Expenditure on Wigram 'Drome

WORK TO COMMENCE AT ONCEPer Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. Additional buildings are to bo put in hand immediately,at the Wigram aerodrome in Canterbury. The prospective cost is about.£2o,ooo. The' Minister of Defence explained to-day that at present there is no housing accommodation for the permanent members of the New Zoaiand Air force at the Wigram station and that consequently men are compelled to live out. Cabinet has approved the acceptance of a tender for the construction of single men’s barracks and also for the provision of new workshops. The existing workshop, which was taken over from the Canterbury Aviation Company, is altogether too small and has been proved to be incapable of handling the work at the aerodrome. It is understood that the cost of the single men’s quarters is between £SOOO and £9OOO, the successful tenderer being Mr C. H. A. Edwards, building contractor. The new workshops arc estimated to cost slightly more than £IO,OOO, the contractors being Messrs P. Graham and Sons, of Christchurch.
