Just a Trip!

Reaching Melbourne at 9.55 a.m. (New Zealand time) on Sunday, October 28, 1931, Squadron-Leader McGregor and Mr H. (J. Walker, flying the Manawatu Aero Club’s Miles Hawk ’plane finished fifth in tho Melbourne centenary air race, seven days 14 hours and 5S minutes after leaving Mildeuhall aerodrome, England—an outstanding performance for a single-engined light ’plane. Only a few people were at Lavington aerodrome in the early morning to welcome McGregor and Walker. Among them were Mr W. G. Black (then president of the Manawatu Aero Club), the Mayors of Christchurch and Dunedin and Mr R. M. Firth (New Zealand Government representative). When the machine was wheeled into the hangar, the spectators laughed as it was accommodated under one wing of the huge Douglas air liner that had won the race.

“Just a trip,” was McGregor’s laconic comment.
