Germans Evade Money Ban
Gormans frequently smuggle cameras into Britain because t*.ey arc not allowed to bring out of Germany suftieienl money for their neeessmes, it was stated by Mr A. L. C. Wright, prosecuting for the Customs at Dover. The practice, he said, hit the Government and shopkeepers as well, and he asked for the maximum penalty against Solly Goldschmidt, a 43-year-old German leather merchant, of Greeueroft Gardens, London, who pleaded not guilty to knowingly importing a camera valued at £2O with intent to defraud the Customs of duty. Mr Wright said that the camera was found among some clothing in a suitcase. Goldschmidt said, “It is ciifiicult to get money out of Germany and equally difficult to get cameras into England.’’ The Bench imposed a penalty of £60 —double value and duty—and ordered the camera to be confiscated.
