Tram Collision When Motorman Collapses

Per Press Association.

WELLINGTON, Jan. 20,

Owing to a motorman collapsing in the Hataitai tunnel yesterday morning, his tram collided with the rear of the preceding tram, but no one was injured and only slight damage was done to the cars. The conductor could have stopped the runaway tram from the rear platform, but he was unaware of tho motorman’s sudden illness and, seeing the motorman’s hat fall on the road, he had left the ear to get it. By the time he had reached the cap the car was well into the tunnel and he was unable to reach it in time to prevent a collision. There were no signs of panic among the passengers. The motorman said later that he thought his collapse was due to ptomaine poisoning. An investigation is to be held.
