WEEK’S RACING PROGRAMME
There will be two raco meetings on Anniversary Day, one at Ashhurst and the other at Trentham. The Wellington meeting is a throe-day fixture and it will be. continued on Friday and Saturday. The Takapuna meeting opens on Saturday, on which day the New Zealand Metropolitan Trots will bo hold.
LITTLE FAST WORK AT TRENTHAM YESTERDAY
COURSE IN GOOD ORDER
WELLINGTON, Jan. 20,
Although so many visiting horses are now on the scene, there was surprisingly little fast galloping at Trentkam this morning. The outside of the courso proper, the trial grass, and the plough tracks were all open, but the majority of the fast work was done on the course proper, on which the distances are correctly marked. The weather was brilliantly fine and the going was in excellent order, the hooves breaking the surface about an inch.
lied Sun and Suueo used the trial grass for their seven furlongs, the former finishing on better a length in front in 1.29 3-5, the last half-mile in 51 3-ssec. The only other gallop of note on this track was a mile by Kiuuoull and Davolo towards the close of the proceedings. Davolo was always going better and with his rider sitting on him quietly he finished a length in front in 1.41 3 5, the last half-mile in 52 Tosec.
There was a frequent diversion at the end of the gallops on tho course proper. Tho new six-strand barrier stretches across the track just past the post, and many of tho horses shied as they came near tho finish. It will be interesting to see if this happens on raco day. Variant and Roaming ran a she-, half-mile in 48sec, and Roaming appeared to be doing it as well as his mate. Royal Papa took 51 2 ssec. Blue Garter and Gay Chief went the last half-mile of five furlongs in 51 2-ssee.
Master Reynard beat Supcrex by a head over five furlongs, the last halfmile in oOsec.
Bon Tray, looking well, did live furlongs alone in 1.5, tho last half-mile in 52 15scc, and the figures would have been better if he had not taken fright at the barrier. Rona Bay was going better than Argentic at the end of five furlongs in 1.3, the last half-mile in 50sec —a good effort.
Gay Broney and Sweet Agnes were together after going a. mile in 1.43 1-5, tho last half-mile in 51sec. Over the same distance Hunting Cat and Passion Fruit took 1.43 2-5, the last halfmile in 52 3-ssec, but they were not pushed out. Several two-year-olds came down the courso proper, but the only serious trial was five furlongs by Notium and Brabant. Notium swept up near the finish and would have won easily if he had not shied at the,' barrier and nearly lost his rider. Other horses out on the track included Paper Slipper, Impersonator Sky Pilot, Fracas, Diatomous, Custos, Cerne Abbas, Nurse Nightingale/Ben Braggie, Laughing Lass, Ethiop, IVliyte Melville, Colombo, Dollar Prince and Silver Ring. The last named looks particularly well and it is evident that he has done plenty of hard work. Up till noon to-day there had been no scratchings, but Kauiul Pasha and Wild Chase are two who have not made the trip, and Copyist is considered unlikely to be on hand.
COSTLY OVERSIGHT
There was a sensation in connection with the Manchester November Handicap, the last big flat race of the Engiish season. The English rule provides that no horso shall be weighed out for any race unless the name of the race, and of the Horse and jockey, have been given in writing by the owner, trainer, or authorised agent, to the clerk of the course (equivalent to secretary in New Zealand) three-quarters of an hour before the time lixed for the race.
This was neglected in connection with tiie overnight second favourite, L’egonias, and he was not allowed to start. It was no consolation for the backers of Eegoinns when the trainer subsequently stated that the horse was sure to have won. He said he loft it to another person to make the declaration, and he (the trainer) was six minutes too late to rectify the position. The stable was credited with having invested £SOO on Pegomas, and lost it without a run.
£17,224 IN ONE SEASON
The late Mr G. D. Greenwood has recently been credited with being the biggest winning owner in New Zealand for any one racing season, his total winnings in that year (1921-22) being . £15,150. A glance at the Turf Register for the 1015-10 season, however, suggests that Mr T. 11. Lowry can claim the honour of being Now Zealand's biggest winning owner, for that season his horses won £17.224 in stakes. At that time Mr Lowry only had some half-dozen horses running for him, but w r lien it is realised that his string included such great gallopers as Desert Gold, Balboa, Tcte-a-Tete, Bjorncborg, Marshal McDonald, and Marco Bello, it is not surprising that the Hawke’s Bay owner got a big slice of stake money.
ASHHURST RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. 5
The following additional riding engagements for Ashhurst wero announced last evening:— Keesing: Count Willonyx, De Trop, Sanguino King. Tremaine: Lavina, Donegal, Wyndale, Warelii Shields: Aga Khan, Bumble. Leach: Pladie. R. Mackio: Royal Routine.

IRISH STATISTICS
Ireland's most successful jockey last year was W. T. O ’Grady, who won 54 of the 157 races in which he rode.
Among the trainers J. T. Rogers was an easy first in stakes, with £11,050, the result of 3S wins by 20 horses. In number of wins, however, he was easily beaten by 11. I. Usher 08, and Senator Parkinson 57. They respectively won £4547 (average less than £7O a win) and £4112 in stakes. Parkinson holds the stakes record for Ireland, horses trained by him winning £12,150 in 1923.
Mr A. K, Pyson, secretary of the Egmont Racing Club, Hawera, was a visitor to Palmerston North yesterday.
RACING EOR CHARITY
In America charity race meetings are not unusual, and at Narragansett Park (Pawtucket, Rhode Island) in November the net proceeds of two days went to Rhode Island charities. Accounts had not been completed at the time the latest papers to hand left America, but it was anticipated £15,000 would be realised.
The Aslihurst Racing Club has made arrangements with the New Zealand Broadcasting Board to broadcast on the course a running commentary of the Wellington cup race, in view of the wide interest that is being evinced in the fixture,
