An Old Riddle

“The Berkshire Book of Song, Khyme and Steeple Chime” quotes the appended riddle, first heard at Coleshill Forest in 1830:

When first the marriago knot was tied between my wife and me,

My age exceeded hers as much as three times three does three. But when ten and a half ten years we man and wife had been, Her age approached as near to mine as eight' does to sixteen.”

Here’s the solution. A 45-year-old bridegroom married a bride of 15. After 15 years the husband was 60 and the wife 30.
