Position in North China Again Critical
JAPANESE DEMANDS TIENTSIN, Jan. 8. The situation in North China is again critical as a result of Japanese demands presented to Sung Cheh \uan, chairman of the Hopei Chahar Council, for the arrest, of fifty Chinese soldiers, who allegedly ransacked a Japanese store and hauled down the Japanese flag at Taku, the dismissal of the commander of the Chinese troops and other officials at Taku, the payment of compensation, the cessation of anti-Japan-ese activities, and a guarantee that there would be no recurrence. Chinese circles fear further demands will follow the shooting affray between Chinese and Japanese soldiers near one of the gates of Peking.
