Lava Flow Stopped

RESULT OP BOMBING HONOLULU, Dec. 31

It is now claimed that the bombing of tho erupting volcano Mauna Loa by military airmen in an effort to divert a gigantic How of lava which threatened the water supply of Hilo and the town itself was successful. The Government volcanologist, Dr. Jagger, said to-day: "Just 21 hours after tho bombing the stoppago of the lava flow began, as I expected it would. The results are interesting and very favourable."

The movement of the fiery stream was described as "virtually imperceptible" 30on after Hilo’s civic leaders had called a mass meeting to discuss emergency action to save the water supply of the town.

The molten lava earlier had flowed at the rate of 150 to 200 feet an hour to within threo miles of the Hilo water supply, and within 18 miles of the town. It cut a wide swath through the timber line at a heat of 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, destroying trees and shrubbery almost instantly.
